Add an oil to it such as linseed oil and work it into the product. Honestly thought, the product is cheap and you should just replace it.

Customer Reviews

Painter's Putty '53' 16 oz. White is rated 2.3 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Learn what this is, and what it isn't All the negative reviewers misused this product. Their fault, and folly. Shawn the builder is obviously no painter. It's painters putty, not builders putty. Ask a career painter, and this is what they use. This is not wood filler. Do not use this on hard woods thinking you can sand it. Don't use a knife. Don't expect it to be dry. Ever. You don't need it to dry. Wise up and stick with me here. This is ideal for pressing into holes left in MDF trim, casing, door jambs, crown molding, shelving, etc after nailing in place with a *brad* nailer, and that's about it. 1. "Pinch" what you need into the tiny divot, pressing firmly as your finger passes over the hole. 2. Gently rub away the excess. 3. Repeat on all holes. 4. (Don't sand it) 5. (Don't wait for it to dry) Paint it. The end. Painters putty, people. Wake up, it isn't that difficult.

This package came very hard and not malleable enough. I tried kneading a small piece and it is still too dense. I don't know if its old or that is how the product is supposed to be. It didn't bond very well to the wood surface. I wemtpack to the package and dug into the middle of this extremely hard putty and tried that. Fortunately its only 6 bucks, but just like buying wood glue no matter hoe hard I try it just dries up after opening.

Sooo now from reading all the posts it appears i"m expected to now prime over the fills with an oil based primer !!?? - before my final coat with a latex paint ? No thanks. My can is extremely hard , oil separating and only useful maybe if I put on some latex gloves and roll into little balls after digging it out of the can where it appears nearly dried out - can stir it or mix it up. The workflow I'm gleaning from posts here just doesn't add up other than huge inefficiency - just can't image production contractors using this. Nail, re-prime, paint. Really ? I would not recommend this to a DIY unless you have some professional paint prep experience and prepared for the workflow described.

An unbelievable 168 hours, 1 full week, Monday afternoon to Monday afternoon, and I had to scrape off 85% of the amount I applied. I sanded with 60 grit and I had to change paper within seconds because it clumped within the sand grits making the paper ineffective. I've used plenty of DAP products in the past but this stuff shouldn't even be on the market. I emailed DAP and got a generic response 24 to 48 for a full cure. Wasted my time, my money, and I hope this stuff doesn't cause me finish issues in the future. Wish I could post 0 stars...

It did not matter how much i rolled it in my hands it would not adhere to the wall. I don't know how long it sat on the shelves at HD. Wish the employee didn't recommend this to me. Think twice before purchasing this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do NOT purchase unless you have specific experience with painter's putty, its pros and cons, and ... Do NOT purchase unless you have specific experience with painter's putty, its pros and cons, and intended uses. Home Depot personnel recommended this product for filling gaps and nail holes in my MDF wall moulding, baseboards, and casings. This product is OIL BASED... meaning it will not dry and does not adhere to latex paints. Do NOT apply product over a latex based primer. It must be applied directly to clean MDF. Do NOT paint over it with latex paint. It must be primed with an oil based primer. Do NOT wait for it to dry and attempt to sand it. It will never dry and is not sandable. If your MDF product has swollen our puckered around the nail hole, you MUST sand that smooth PRIOR to applying this putty. I applied this product per the instructions of HD personnel. Unfortunately I had already primed my wall moulding with latex primer. The product was easy to work and smoothed over nail holes and imperfections with ease. As per HD's instruction, I painted over the putty shortly after application with my LATEX Behr Marquee paint. Two days later, the putty began to loosen from the latex primed surface and nail holes became visible. The paint would sag with the weight of the putty. The patched areas that did not sag hid the nail hole well. HOWEVER... when touched with the slightest pressure, the paint over-coat would peeled away revealing the soft putty beneath. I have had to meticulously dig all the putty from the wall with the purpose of replacing it with standard vinyl spackling. My walls are covered (top-to-bottom) in wall moulding. Thousands of dollars in moulding have been affected, and I am hoping it can be repaired rather then replaced. I would gander that most people looking for a product to fill nail holes, etc. at Home Depot are envisioning a standard spackling paste. One that will harden quickly, can be sanded upon drying, and is ACTUALLY compatible with latex paint (not AFTER it has been primed with an oil-based primer). Learn from my mistakes. Use with caution and only if you have experience with this product. Otherwise you may end up with a horrible and expensive mess like myself and many other reviewers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it's supposed to do! Painter's Putty was introduced to me by a professional painter. You take a small piece of the putty, roll it to shape you want it to be, put it in place, then paint over it. It MUST be painted over. It is not wood filler, it's not meant to be wood filler. If the directions are followed and used in the manner this product was designed for, it works great. I have used it fill nail holes on crown molding, etc., and it works great. For a nail hole in a regular wall, I'd use wood filler.
