Is this product waterproof ? Intend to use on home exterior and want to keep water out ?
Asked by: steve
No! We used it to fill in some small holes in siding. Let it dry and cure, painted it with two coats of high quality Behr paint. First rain the stuff turned to wet dust. We had to start all over with a different product. As expensive as this stuff is, it's going in the trash. I won't even use it inside now.

No. I tried doing the same thing and as soon as it rained this turned into a mess. Very disappointing.

Can I paint it with enamel

Yes, but if using light colors multiple coats will be needed to hide the spots patched with this product.

Plastic Wood-X 32 oz. All-Purpose Woodfiller is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 174.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Plastic Wood has changed for the worse! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! This is not the plastic wood we have been using for years. It is a new, less effective formula. Where the old plastic wood was very fast drying and could fill a depression up to 1/2" deep in a single application; this revised formulation is very slow drying and requires multiple applications for any depression over 1/16" deep. If you paint in less than two days after application, it will bleed through paint, requiring additional painting. The thinness of the product causes much more waste when applying with a putty knife. And finally, the packaging is misleading in regards to quantity, your container will be no more than half full. Buy a different brand.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product is NOT adequate for exterior applications. I read all the fine print prior to use. I... This product is NOT adequate for exterior applications. I read all the fine print prior to use. I have used DAP products before and was satisfied. I used this product to fill nail/screw holes after refinishing my deck this year. I sanded, and then painted my railings and spindles white over this product with no problem. However after one or two rains, this product to turned to mush. To make matters worse, this stuff now appears to be staining the white paint a light brown/rust color at all points of application. I bet this stuff is great for indoors and out of the weather areas. Don't use this product anywhere that might get rain/snow.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Have bought the product for 50 years. The product works well if you follow the directions carefully. Have some acetone, for thinning, on hand. Use the tube only once; there's no way to thin the product in the tube. The product dries out fast and works best if the consistency is close to that of peanut butter. Keep in mind: a thin coat dries in an hour or less, but a coat too thick, greater than a quarter inch, takes a very long time, sometimes days. When applied carefully, the product is strong, finishes nicely, blends nicely, and takes paint well.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Messy installed crown molding that was already stained and lacquered to cabinets. Used the walnut Plastic Wood to fill the nail holes and what a mess. This stuff sticks to lacquer like crazy. Impossible to wipe off. My intent was to fill the holes, lightly sand and then hit with stain and buff so as to not have to re-lacquer. Now, I have to wet sand with 400 grit just to get the excess filler off and will have to touch-up spray after finishing to get the sheen back. Any tips on how to avoid such a mess next time? Is there a solvent or something that will take this stuff of lacquer instead of elbow grease?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Two bd experiences Today I bought a tube of this to use to fill some cracks in my deck. As I squeezed the tube, it basically blew up in my hand. It was of no use. I bought the same product about a month ago and it was fine. A year or so ago, I tried the same product in a can. It was dry off the shelf. Years ago, this was a reliable product. Not so much so now it seems. You also used to be able to get, if I recall correctly, a decent sized tube of the product. All I can find now is around 2 oz tubes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DAP Plastic Wood works wonders!!! I use DAP Plastic Wood wood filler all the time for building props and set pieces in the entertainment industry. Many of the negative reviews I've seen here are based on not understanding the product or how to properly use it. Used correctly, this stuff is fantastic! It cures quickly, sands beautifully, and takes paint with ease. Thanks, DAP, for producing a terrific and reliable product. Keep up the good work!!! (Oh, and for those complaining about the can being 'half empty'... that's how it's supposed to be! The space is for mixing/thinning with acetone and adding color.)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Would be nice to have in caulk tube! I'm filling some glue-lam beams that have separated between the plies slightly. Not structurally a problem, but more astetically an issue. The tubs and tubes are difficult to apply in my case, and the quick dry time makes it challenging to get into the groves (1/2 - 1 inch deep and 1/8 to 1/4 inch wide). I have tried loading the product up in a clean blank tube of caulk with good success, but loading it is a pain and messy. Would be great to offer this in a caulk tube where the tip size could be varied and it would help it get into deep grooves or cracks and could be used for longer fill scenarios. Do caulk tubes of this product exist?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Efficient, Quick Wood Fix Tool Dap Plastic Wood-X with DryDex is quick and easy to use. Its pink color threw me off for a few seconds, until I saw that it dried a neutral light brown color. I used this to fill in deep cracks in a couple of fence posts that otherwise would have needed to be replaced. For this project I did not need to sand it afterward. But if you have a crack where you want the fix to look smooth, just scrape it on with a trowel, or a painters trowel (a flexible acrylic paint trowel is what I used), wait for it to dry completely and sand. Then you can paint over it and it will look as if the damage was never there. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
