Questions & Answers

After 20 hours this product has not dried and is not paintable. Should I keep waiting or is there something wrong?

I applied as directed around wooden window trim and fiber cement siding to prevent moisture. The product is not just sticky, it's wet. When I touch it, it smears it. The tune says 2-4 hours of drying time.
Asked by: David
I have found that this caulking needs 24 hour drying time before attempting to paint it. I have waited even longer, depending on the depth of the gap you're filling. If you rush into painting while it's still wet, I'd believe it would delay the cure of the caulking beneath and you'd have a mess. DAP's 230 caulking is much faster drying and it can be painted (depending on temp and humidity) after two hours. Though not a durable as sidewinder, it has been a great performer for me in lighter applications.

Does it stays permanent white or yellowing after time, thank You

Asked by: GUY
I stays white. I generally paint over it, and paint sticks to it like any other paintable caulking.

I recently had a need to laminate plywood to door faces due to the fact that the old door faces had holes punched through them. I cut the ply an 1/8th inch oversize so I could trim it off with a router after drying. Using Dap's Sidewinder ply was the choice I made as the adhesive instead of construction adhesive. I've used sidewinder for large cracks and as a gap filler on many occasions but never as a sheet adhesive. This caulking has held up remarkably well in tough, outdoor settings so I was confident it was up to the task. I applied a 1/2" wide bead about a 3/4" from the door edge all the way around, and then put zig zag beads across the rest of the door. The critical adhesion location was all around the edges, where the damaged holes were and around the existing door knob hole. I wanted a consistent squeeze out in those areas to ensure no delamination could occur in the future. Once I carefully laid the new ply down onto the sidewinder beads, I hand pressed it down starting from the center of the door and worked out to the outside perimeter. Once satisfied I had 100% squeeze out, I placed 1 x 4 boards on top of the plywood edge and C clamped those down while the job cured. Removing the clamps after a few hours I then let the doors sit overnight for the sidewinder to fully cure. I took my router with a flush trim bit and removed the slight overhanging plywood and the sidewinder squeeze out. A bit of hand sanding the edges made the doors look like new. Then, I used the correct sized hole saw to bore through from the inside, creating just the pilot hole in the new plywood face. After that I flipped the doors over to the plywood side and completed drilling out the door knob hole. Perfect! Primed and painted them, and they look like new. The sidewinder did the trick, low mess, sticky as can be, hardened to a long lasting, paintable result. Highly, highly recommended over construction adhesive for this kind of job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've been a painter for over 35 years, this is the best... I use it when moisture intrusion can be a problem or if I need good adhesion between different types of materials.
