What is the shear capacity of a #9- 2 1/2 in coated deckmate screw. working with a pergola company to attach beams to c

Asked by Matt December 5, 2019

Answer

Shear strength for screws is lower than solid shank nails..... the dia. of the screw includes the threads which has very little strength except in pull out conditions so you will need to go up on screw size to increase shank size to equal that of nails.... there are industry charts online if you need actual limitations

Are these a structural replacement for 16d nails?

Answers

Absolutely not. I worked as builder until I was 30 then went to school and became a structural engineer (I guess some engineers do have hands on experience). But you don't need to be an engineer to prove this. Put a deck screw and a 16d nail in a vice with about an inch and half sticking up. Now wack them with a hammer from the side. The nail will bend all the way over but the screw will break more often than not. Also, they are not code approved there is no Evaluation Report or Testing by ICC. I have pulled up deck boards that I myself put in with coated deck screws years before and some screws had started to corrode and become very thin near the top. Use them to hold deck boards down only. Never use them for the structural framing of the deck or anything else. Now because I am a hypocrite, I am writing this from within an office that I built in my garage that I fastened together entirely with Deckmate screws, but I know its temporary and I'm only putting myself at risk ☺. I'm thinking of switching my go-to screw inventory to a rated screw like GRK. Again, please don't put future people at risk by using screws for load bearing framing.

What is the shear strength of these screws? How much weight one screw hold?

Answers

Because there is no evaluation or testing by a recognized third party testing agency there is know way to be sure of the steel strength of these screws. Don't use screws that don't have an ICC Evaluation Report for load bearing structural applications. Screws can be stronger than nails but are usually more brittle and prone to break suddenly as opposed to bending slowly. Just because someone says they have done something for along time and nothing bad happened is not proof that they are doing the right thing. The reason screws are not recommended is because of many other peoples experiences where something bad DID happen when they used screws instead of nails. Also, there are structural screws available. If your dead set on screws, look into code compliant options instead of Deckmate screws.

Can these be used on #2 GC Pressure-Treated Southern Yellow Pine Timber?

Yes but I wouldn't trust them. New thread design reduces grip considerably. Would not recommend Deckmate right now.

Can this type of screws used for composite deck?

Yes, don't see why not, and the design works well to use without predrilling.

What does the # mean before the length of the screw?

The number references the diameter of the screw with a smaller number for thinner screws and a bigger number for thicker screws.

New deck boards on my bridge across pond. 150 plus boards. 4 runners. 2 screws per runner. Boards 50 inch wide. Month after install screws snapping off. Probably close to 10 percent.

Built a 20 by 50 ft addition to my deck 1.5 years ago look what happened to the screws. The tan screw is what they are supposed to look like, the green screws is what I used , everyone snapped , every single screw is broken at the exactly same spot. I have to redo the deck

I use deckmate screws for everything. I remodeled an old farmhouse with oak framing. Framing nails would bend everytime. Deckmate screws with a strong corded driver, no problem! I've never had one snap or strip. Drive them in, drive them out over and over, no problem! My framing nailer has collected dust for years. I use 3" deckmates to frame decks and ramps now.

These deck screws rock. I built this whole deck with just these screws and a couple of clips of galv 16'ds. I have not had any failures to date and have been using them for over 6 years on small framing projects where it was more practical using these screws instead of 16's due to "wandering" when hitting old wood.

I have gone through twice as many crews as I should have. Many of the screws just drill through the wood and strip out causing me to put more screws in the boards that planned. Many of the heads are either not shaped correctly or have something in them making them not usable. My other box of Grip Rite screws work much better.
