Heavy duty! I found this bit to be very heavy duty. My only complaint was that my drill is only a 12v and couldn’t go the distance with the bit! This bit has a nice screw point tip which does keep it from wobbling. I used this bit to drill holes in some stumps in the yard. Worked very well for that purpose. Seems to be of very good quality. I would expect nothing less from DeWalt!

Perfect for drilling holes through two studs 16” OC single pass with a bit length of 17-1/2”. This bit includes hardened edges to easily cut through nail/screw embedded wood. This bit also includes a quick change shank for fast and efficient bit changes. This will also fit any 1/2” drive chuck. Excellent choice for an electrician who is running romex. Two thumbs up!

Great purchase for the long haul. A very efficient and durable auger drill bit for any contractor's needs. This auger bit is well constructed and has a good amount of weight to help go through the thickest wood on the job site. Easily sharpened if you hit a nail. Good for homerun hole and plumbing pipes on new construction. Protective sleeve is sturdy and easy to store. Has a 3/8" shank to be used in an extension.

This auger bit is meant mostly for construction work, but we also used it for some initial post-hole digging in order to get past a few heavy rocky areas. It performed very well at this task and cut our time considerably in those areas. Note that the shank is a 7/16" ball groove shank, so it won't fit just any drill. It does make it easy to quickly change bits as needed. It also has a dual cutting edge, which makes for quicker and heavier-duty work.

This ship auger is better quality than its price suggests. I know they are not cheap but this bit cuts clean, doesn't slow down on nails, and maintains an edge for quite a long time. I didn't think it would perform as good as my Diablo's but so far it has. More time is needed.
I cringe when I see people complain about ship augers. Most were not used properly. Especially bits larger than 1/2", the speed needs to be kept slow - no more than 600RPMs. Hardwoods need even slower speeds. Take care of these expensive bits and they will provide long service.
My only grip is the case is not have a lid I can remove and attach like Diablo's ship auger bits
Irwin seems to have slipped on quality, these DeWalt's are as good if not better than the older ones.

As for cost, once you get into drilling holes that wide and (especially) long, there aren’t a lot of options to be able to shop based on best price; unless you only need to drill 1 or 2 holes and then who cares if the bit breaks! I am a DIY guy so I may never put this size through the paces as a contractor would; but did go middle ground as it will get used enough through the years, & I can afford it. I used an 18V cordless, 2 speed, hammer drill/driver. Although I have a handle, I didn’t feel it was needed for the 3 holes I drilled into 4x4 timbers to a depth of 8 inches each. I did drill horizontally based on length of the 4x4’s and leverage. I will be drilling longer holes but not before writing this review. The Drill bit maximum speed is 1800rpm, but I felt it worked best at half that or slower. I’m satisfied with the bit based on use and cost; and I would recommend.
The Dewalt 7/8 inch X 17 inch power ship auger bit is a great auger bit for drilling deep holes needed to run electrical cables and copper or plastic water pipes. The long bit makes it easier to cut through multiple floor and wall joists where two or three beams are between floors. The self feed spur tip makes starting holes easier and more accurate. Dual cutting edges make cutting easier and help move wood chips out the deep flutes on the bit. It's never a good idea to hit a nail when drilling if possible but this bit is durable enough to be used in nail embedded wood. A heavy duty 1/2 inch drill is almost a necessity as this bit really grabs into the wood and moves quickly. The hex shaped shank on the bit locks easily on to the drill chuck and wont slip under heavy loads. You can feel the high torque as it cuts and a two handled drill would be recommended. I have used similar types of long drills, both regular drills and spade bits but this auger type is the easiest and quickest way to get the job done. I expect this drill bit to last a long time.

First thing to know about this 17 inch auger is that you will need a drill with a 1/2" chuck in order for the shank to fit (this is not mentioned anywhere on the packaging). The chuck of the common household 3/8" drill will be too small. The other important item is having a powerful enough drill to properly drive this auger. I used a drill with a 5.5 amp motor and it still bogged down as I got most of the auger into a cedar pine tree stump. Compared to using spade drill bits this auger made quick work while removing most of the saw dust.
The screw point tip makes starting easy, and actually all but eliminates the need to push down on the auger. Unlike a spade bit which will require driving it, the screw point pulls the auger into the material. When digging deep holes this will mean having to run the auger in reverse in order to remove it. I drilled about a dozen holes the full length of the auger with the last being as easy as the first. For those just drilling through a beam, this auger will make short work of it.
The auger bit comes in a rectangular storage holder which prevents it from rolling around and includes a tab with a hole for hanging.

This DEWALT 11/16 in. x 17 in. Power Ship Auger Bit is one mean tough drill bit. It is around 18" when placed in drill. It is made of high speed steel and is 11/16 in diameter. It really powers its way through any type of lumber without failing. It has a dual edge that cuts thru nails as well without binding. Just make sure you have a powerful drill that can handle the long action. I'm very impressed with this bit.

This 1" auger bit is impressive. The overall length is 17.25". The spiral auger portion is 11" long and the shank is 5.5" long. It weighs 22 oz. The screw point tip is 3/4" long and 1/4" thick at the base - beefy enough that it should hold up to repeated use. The 7/16 grooved hex shank can be used in a regular 1/2" chuck or with a quick-release chuck. The clear plastic slip case has multiple click notches to adjust the length for a secure fit to protect this bit.
It drilled a clean 1" hole while ejecting a pile of 1/4" chips.I don't recommend this but I accidentally dropped it tip down on a concrete floor and the pointed screw tip was still fine.
There's no mention of what RPM to use this bit at but my chart says suggests 525 RPM. The drill is made in Brazil.
