Questions & Answers

How thin can you plane boards with this item?

I have some nice scrap pieces that I need to take down for a project. The scraps are about 3 feet long and 9/16 in. thick. Many are bowed and I will probably have to take them down to about half that thickness.
Asked by: DeadMuleJohn
The thinnest I can get is about 1/2" as the planer comes. There are ways to get it much thinner, but not as the planer is equipped.

Can this item be affixed to my current dust collection system.?

My dust collection system is a mix of metal and plastic hoses at a 4" dia. I would like to attach this machine to this system with a hard plastic adapter and a flexible 4" hose.

I have mine connected with the dust right 4" flexible blue hose into my 4" hard piped system. As others stated if you do not use dust collection with this planer inside be prepared for a lot of clean up.

Hello everyone, I bought a brand new Dewalt planer dw735x. I opened it to check to make sure nothing was damaged during shipment. The dust shroud has sawdust in it. I did not expect to see sawdust in brand new item. Did anyone have the same issue? Thank You!
Asked by: Quoc
A Dewalt product expert said that a brand new planer should not have sawdust.

My deck boards are 2"x6"x16' cedar. I plan to pull them up and resurface them. Will this plainer pull a 16' board thru or will I have to hand feed it? Deck is 30'x14' so buying all new is out of the question.
Asked by: papajim
The planer will feed any length board as long as you meet the minimum length. You'll be fine. With 16' boards I strongly suggest you have an infeed and outfeed support of some type, not just the small metal ones that came with the planer.

I am like a lot of guys - love my tools but need a justification to get new tools. I had a couple pieces of white oak that were left over from a mantle I had made years ago. They had been laying around and were in pretty rough shape and I was about to toss them when my wife came up with a project. Perfect opportunity to test out the DeWalt thickness planer. I ended up getting the whole package - planer, spare blades, stand and in/out feed tables. Have to say this planer worked like a star! Even with the rough shape of the wood I was working with I was able to control snipe fairly well. Working with the white oak, I only took light passes 1/16 or less and kept the planer running at finishing speed. There is a speed for dimensioning but the slower feed rate was plenty fast enough for what I needed to do. It was easy to set up and operate and now that I have it will find a lot of uses for it. Plus rough cut hardwood is a heck of a lot cheaper than sanded 4 sides. I have a bunch of curly maple I am itching to run through it. The only thing I wish it used a generic planer blade vs DeWalt blades. Hopefully the DeWalt's last a while because they are not cheap.

It has been a great addition to our shop. I've run red oak, white oak, mahogany, pine and black walnut. It has handled everything I've thrown at it so far and I'm really happy with it. The adjustment's are smooth and having the infeed and outfeed tables are definitely recommend having. I've made a few end grain cutting boards and also ran these through with no chip out.

WOW!! I researched planers thoroughly before making this purchase, and Home Depot had this item for $60 less than any other retailer (basically the infeed/outfeed tables and an extra set of blades were free). Shipping was very fast; delivery was two days after placing order. After having surfaced the board(s) on my jointer (Cutech 8” carbide jointer - also a great choice), this planer did a great job of planing and bringing the board(s) to selected thickness. It’s ease of use and the quality of results were outstanding. I would encourage the buyer to purchase a 4” dust collection hose; the planer blasts the shavings out the end of a 10’ section. Overall, if you are considering a bench top planer, this is a great choice!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best "portable" planer made! While not cheap it is worth every penny if you are any serious type of woodworker! If you are going to be handling fine woods why would you trust it to a inferior tool. I have used this Dewalt 735 planer for a number of years and hands down it is the best on the market in the "portable" category. It's about 100 lbs. so it isn't the lightest but it is manageable if needed to move. I would highly recommend getting the package with the in and out feed tables as it greatly reduces snipe and makes handling your material much easier. Also consider getting the Dewalt planer stand to add to this beast as it makes an excellent sturdy base that can be moved around from place to place in your shop. Again save a little bit longer and choose the best, the Dewalt 735 planer! Also free shipping which is great considering the weight on this momma!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding performance Regardless of the sort time that I have had this planer I have milled around 100 board feet of red oak, hickory and walnut. My research paid off with regard to getting the in-feed/out-feed tables and mounting it on a mobile base. The first thing I noticed when it arrived was when I lifted the box it didn't lift. This thing is heavy. After getting things setup and adjusted I started to use it. I've used some very large industrial planers in the past. The Dewalt was faster, easier to use and virtually no snipe. On long boards 4/4 X 12" X 8' I used roller stands and with the stands and tables I had no snipe. The fine cut gives the appearance that the board has been sanded to about 80 grit. The dust collection is fantastic. The fan assist keeps chips and dust clear. I use a cyclone lid on a 35gal trash can in conjunction with a 1hp dust collector. It didn't take long to fill it all up. This planer is one of the best tool buys I've done. It is a great addition to my shop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My opinion: "Best portable planer on the market." I wore out the bushings on my old faithful Makita 12-inch, so it was time to step up to the issue. I read several reviews, but an article in a recent magazine detailed how this machine had a means to avoid (or minimize, at least) the "snipe" that most planers leave on processed boards. Out of the box (after installing the extension tables & following the guidance in the article about adjusting them), this machine was an improvement beyond comparison! After fiddling with the adjustments a little (easy-to-follow instructions), my results are almost "final" on the low-speed, "rough cut" setting. With the "finish", high-speed setting, the boards are ready to finish, w almost no machining marks at all, so only one pass is needed at this setting (probably will save knives, as well as reducing wasted wood ends). Only drawback: "Portable" comes with a weight penalty, and I have a tricky back. So, I built a little wheeled cart to fit, with storage for a desktop jointer and some other machining accessories. Tip: build a box to store the accessories (table, exhaust fitting, blades) so that it will fit on the primary table; that way you can store everything you need in the unit itself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Checked out the rest bought the best (portable planer) Have been working on some rough oak for stair treads for a sons christmas present, the finish quality is excellent, being able to set the mechanical stop and not worry about over or under sizing the finished stock is a big deal for a part time wood butcher like me. Finished a pile of high end cherry boards and started on some maple these will be used for two dining tables also for Christmas presents. I am still on the first side of the original blades and the finish is still impressive. The chip removal blower is top shelf stuff and will blow chips the length of my garage if I do not hook up the dust collector. I have had a couple of pieces with some snipe but that was self inflicted majority is snipe free. Although the planer is heavy the handles are large and balance is good so moving is not as difficult as my Delta portable that is about half the weight of the Dewalt. I would love to reccommend this unit to my friends but do not want to tip them off that I have it and avoid the "borrow" conversation for a while longer. This is a high end portable tool producing stationary level quality results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from JUST DO IT. Bought this planer after much research. Being budget, space, and experience limited this planer with the stand has been fantastic. It is not cheap but good tools aren’t cheap. This is one of those tool to get your foot in the door and once you see what’s inside that door you’re just going to want more. Just buy one and you’ll enjoy it.
