My DeWalt 779 compound miter saw cut perfect out of the box,but there are adjustment screws for fine tuning if needed. The DEWALT Heavy-Duty Miter Saw Stand is the perfect height for me and I am almost six feet tall. One thing I love about the saw is the light above the blade that lets you see exactly where the blade cuts, instead of a laser that shows the edge of the blade.

The brackets that attach the saw to the stand are generic and can be bolted to most any saw. If by some situation your saw won't work; you can still attach a piece of plywood as a base for your saw and attach that to the brackets. In any case yes it will work, in fact: if your 8 ft tall you could attach your table saw to it.

I have attached a picture of the tool that came with my saw. They may have made some changes to the tool. The important thing is whether or not you can accomplish a saw blade change with the tool you were provided. With my saw the star end of the tool is to loosen the screws that hold the blade guard in place while the hex socket end fits the arbor bolt that secures the saw blade itself. Not sure how your saw blade is attached to the arbor on your saw. Is there a recess in the arbor bolt that will accept the hex end of your tool? It could be just a different bolt - where mine is a conventional hex head bolt yours may be an allen head bolt. As long as you can change blades I don't suppose it matters that much.

Make a couple of saw horses and place a sturdy sheet of plywood down and clamp things down. It wouldn't cost as much and would be a lot more useful for you now.

How much does it weigh?

What is the difference berween 779 and 780

Asked by Scott June 23, 2020

Answer

The Dewalt DWS 780 offers the bright LED light for the XPS Cutline positioning system (blade alignment marking) that the DWS 779 does not offer. This is a blade shadow marking system which is extremely accurate. The 779 comes with a steel blade while the 780 comes with a carbide blade. See a more full comparison at: https://toolspeek.com/dws779-vs-dws780/ If you can get the 780 on sale and do a lot of cutting this might be a good choice. I see the 779 is currently on sale for 349 vs 599 for the 780. The 779 is currently the better deal.

Excellent saw.
I purchased this saw one month ago, and have had several opportunities to use it. I am impressed. Did it come perfectly squared out of the box? The main table did not, but I verified that before cutting anything, and was able to follow the instructions to make it square quite easily. Even at full extension it cuts square and does not flex. The bevel gauge was set exactly on in the factory. Simply remember: trust, but verify. Some other reviews mentioned a plastic piece under the table being in the way of the blade. It is not a problem. the piece of the dust collection channel which contacts the blade before the first cut is made is less than an inch long and maybe 1/16 inch is cut away on the first cut. This does not impact the dust collection or saw operation at all. The dust collection works, OK, maybe best possible for a sliding saw. Connect a shop vac to the saw and there is very little to clean up. The light (XPS) for casting a blade shadow is very nice, and it is dead on. Is it a crutch? Sure. Do you have to use it? No. That's your choice, but without an in shop workstation it is a huge help. The light is bright enough and focused so the cut line matches the shadow exactly. Some things that are not 100%. The stock clamp has its limits, specifically with thinner or narrow stock. The screw design tends to cause the stock to twist away from the fence as it is being tightened, heads up. The table extensions/carry handles, meh. They do not fit properly and end up not aligning with the table . Home Depot product description states this saw will cut 2 x 16 dimensional lumber. Nope. Max cut measures to 14 inches from fence on the table. DeWalt specifies 14 inch max cut on their box. While unpacking my saw I discovered the clamps for the extensions/carry handles were not in the box. I emailed DeWalt customer service directly specifying the issue, with photos, and received a case #. After about a week I called DeWalt and left a message requesting a call back. I received a call after about two hours. The customer service rep listened, took the case number, placed an order to provide the missing parts and explained the needed shipping time. I received the parts within the estimated shipping time. Excellent customer service. Ironic that I will not be using the extension/carry handles. Overall, it is an excellent saw.

Customer review from dewalt.com logo
Our pastor was building a library at his house. I volunterred to help. We spent 3 months plus building 72 book cases. Thee mitre saw was special. Being able to set it for shelves lenght and just keep cutting knowing they would be perfect, then cutting trim and it going in like a glove. He was as happy as can be and we (3) we also. I bought this saw to replace a 20+ year old Bosch 3912 which finally killed itself. I've been waiting for this funeral for a long time (the Bosch wasn't a slider and only had various laser add-ons and kerf plates over the years). It was exciting to find my local Home Depot had this Dewalt in stock and I could get it during the pandemic easily. It is quite evolved since the time the Bosch was designed. I'm very impressed with everything about it. Even more so that it was a direct replacement right onto my BOSCH Portable Gravity-Rise Wheeled Miter Saw Stand T4B. Same hardware and super easy to swap out. Definitely recommend that stand for this saw. In a lot of reviews of this saw I've seen questions about if the extra cost for the LED "laser" line was worth the extra cost over the model without it. The answer is a definite YES. A quality add-on laser is at least $120 and those are not nearly as good as this LED system. It lights your work and casts a very clear shadow of the blade cut-line onto your work, just narrower than the width of the blade. Easy to get used to and very much clearer than a laser in most lighting. The fence is totally straight (my Bosch was not and there was no way to adjust it). The fence is high and slides easily. The extra detents are excellent. I already used one of the odd ones 31.x degrees (or somewhere around there) for some stair risers. Perfect. Easy to tilt the saw and calibrate every stop, and go back to exactly 90 degrees with no hassle. My only complaint is that the instructions fail to mention how you get the 16" capacity. Remove the fences and raise the back of the material to sit on top of the remaining sub-fence. There are little stops at the back of it. You can add 1.5" of material to raise the material up level, or just cut your workpiece at an angle with no support (at least for construction-grade cuts). Definitely make it level if you are using hardwoods for a nice project. This model has been out for almost a decade, and they haven't added that to the manual yet, but it's advertised on the display saws at Home Depot? I figured it out by searching the internet for others who had figured it out. Weird. The other thing is the manual says you can slide the kerf plates together to narrow the kerf. That's not true. You'll need to buy an aftermarket zero-clearance kerf plate for that. Again, a decade later and the manual is still wrong? Anyway, it is light years ahead of what it replaced, and I recommend it. One last thing - the dust collection is terrible, but so are all saws less than $1000. Hook up a vacuum hose (see photo) and it works much better. Also there are videos out there showing how to modify the dust collection shroud to vastly improve it. I plan to do that, eventually.

Spot on out of the box. Blade was perfectly square to fence, and perfectly plumb, and ready to cut. I checked all bolts first and they were all properly tightened. The DeWalt definitely has a fairly well designed dust extraction and is a workhorse. I don't need the added girth, but you can rip 16" wide 2" plank with it if you remove the lower fence with a simple Torx bit. It easily rivals the $600.00 Bosch. Only slight problem was the blade bottoms out slightly beneath the throat plate on a small haunch of plastic. It's just a small design oversight. You can adjust the depth stop to solve it. But, that's not necessary because the raised plastic serves no structural purpose. Just rip through the plastic a bit at a time. Problem solved. Upgrading this saw to equal the DWS780 @ $600.00 is easy enough by adding the XPS Light System It can be had online for $70.00 and there are videos that show how easy it is to modify. Like most woodworkers (I'm a fine artist, not a craftsman), accuracy is very important to me, and I tend to always use my eye, not a laser. I never use them. Lo and behold the XPS light system is NOT a laser. It's amazing. No more pencil lines needed all the way across a board anymore with this light. It's perfectly accurate. I'm not joking. The shadow the light casts onto your wood piece is so accurate it shows the blade thickness and the teeth of both sides of the blade the full length of your board's width. This saw has it going on. If you can afford the DWS780 at $600 then go for it and save yourself the outfit hassle. Dust extraction problem is not as bad as everyone says in these reviews. The little rubber shroud form the factory intended to funnel sawdust into the dust collector tube is not the best design but also easily modified. I unfolded the rubber onto a copper sheet and slightly enlarged it, and curved it after tin-snipping and smoothing it. Now hooked up to a 6HP Shop VAC 75%+ of my saw dust is gone. It really does not get much better than that for any miter saw. I'll include 3 photos here showing the XPS Shadow Light after modifying mine and the copper shroud. You'll also notice I added a custom zero tolerance sacrificial fence and throat plate. The closeup of the XPS Light shadow cast is without a drawn pencil line to show sharpness. Also, the shadow does not lose width or integrity with length like a laser. 100% accurate when you place your cut line on the blades tooth shadow. I'd rate this DWS779 miter saw 5 stars all day.

Get this if you want the most rugged, dependable, feature-rich miter saw with maximum cutting capacity. While certainly pricey, this is the one to get if you want to have no regrets about which saw you bought. With the possible exception of its footprint there are no areas of this saw that will leave you wishing you had gone with another one. The XPS light casts an error-proof shadow marking your cut, expediting the process in a way I did not expect to be so useful. For most of my tools I tend to choose more economical options, but in my opinion miter saws are a category where precision is important and unfortunately that precision costs extra. If you are ok with "close enough" there are much cheaper ways to go, but if imperfect miter/bevel cuts annoy you I highly recommend this. Consider purchasing the crown stops as well if you plan to do a fair amount of moulding.

Great Right Out of the Box
Customer review from dewalt.com logo
Still no complaints after having had this for about 7 months now. Arrived square right out of the box and required no adjustments. Sure there are better blades out there, but the DeWalt brand one that comes with it does a fine job. Having dealt with lasers on saws before, I will never go back to them after having the XPS light on this. The shadow can't lie. Where the shadow is, is where your cut will go. I would recommend to anyone.
