Good question, This included a Bag instead of a case, a charger, and a 4.0ah battery in addition to a removable plastic marring tip

What are the differences between this framing nailer and the DeWalt DCN692? Why would one choose one over the other? I'm a do-it-yourselfer and I have built everything from a deck to an entire storage building and I'm looking for a cordless framing nailer.
Asked by: Rob
Good question, The main difference is the type of nails they use. This one is for 21degree plastic strip nails, whereas the previous 2 are 30degree paper nails. I would go with this one as there are more 21degrees plastic nails and this one is a few lbs lighter. If nothing else the weight should play a big factor in your decision. Also this one takes nails upto 3-1/4" whereas the other models take nails upto 3-1/2" however, this one can accommodate thick nails. Upto .148" I believe the other ones from Dewalt stop at .131.

Can a 9ah battery or even a 12ah battery be compatible with this framing nailer?
Asked by: Rotom
Good question, Yes all Dewalt Batteries. The 4.0s are the minimum recommended, but you can use smaller ones

could you use the paper nails instead of the plastic nails?

Asked by: dom
Good Question, Not for this one. This model is just for the plastic nails, the previous models require the paper nails

Just the thing when your job is too big for a hammer but not worth dragging out the air compressor. I can hand-hammer a few nails, but I'm out of practice. An air-nailer will bang a lot of nails with ease, but you have to drag-out a compressor and find power and rig a hose hanging off the air-nailer; fine for large work but a chore for mid-size jobs. This is a battery "air-nailer". A motor spins-up a flywheel and BAM hits the nail into the wood. That must be pretty tricky engineering, to make a bammer which will hold up. DeWalt is good at such machinery. All my other DeWalt tools have given complete satisfaction. I really like DeWalt's heavy-duty construction. A professional tool should take some accidental abuse. My initial test was with some very dense #1 SYP and the maximum 3.25" nails. Let the motor whine-up to full speed, less than 2 seconds. It sank every nail fine. I love the magazine latch! It is slim, will not snag on clothes, and is very easy to work, open or close.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Gun - EXCEPT... I currently own both the DCN692M1 & now this DCN21PLM1. The main reason for uprading/replacing is because nails for the DCN692 are hard to procure & moreover, are not "code" in a growing # of municipalities. The DCN21 is a great gun itself & the only negative, I have observed thus far is the increased weight & especially the size- hence a one star deduction. The product/kit gets another star deduction for DeWalt being sooo cheap, as to not provide a Hard CARRY CASE. I can't even use the case, which did come with the DCN692, because the DCN21 is BIGger & just won't fit- even with modification, which I have done with other tools... C'm'on, DeWalt... care about your customers to at least give them the option to have hard carry cases (instead of the skimpy soft cases) on ALL of our expensive tools/investments, as we don't like them sloshing around, getting banged/scratched-up...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly Powerful and Nimble! After about a month of good use I felt I had to share my excitement! I just wanted to say I have used other cordless framers in the past that dont even compare to the ability of the 21° framer. I ran through about 30 clips so far of 3 1/4 inch nails with no issues at all. It is very easy to adjust the depth right where it's needed. I found I liked the bump fire mode the most when testing so thats where it stayed. It charges right when you pull the trigger or depress the tip vs on single fire it does not charge when just pulling the trigger. My favorite part has to be how easy the spring mechanism is to opporated. You just pull it back to lock position and pull again to release with little effort needed compared to some others. I have always hated dragging air hose around and I am now one step closer to cutting the cord/hose. I will be sure to try the brad nailers next as I am very pleased with the framer. I hope a coil roofer is next on the list!!! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I purchased this tool for the convenience of using framing nailer without being tied to the compressor. Not having to purchase fuel and using my existing 20v batteries made this gun stand out. However, the gun could not perform and is very heavy compared to a pneumatic gun or a Paslode. I tested the gun in both sequential and bump modes, and less than half of the 3" nails were fully seated. Quite a few were at least 1/4" above the SPF studs.

The DeWalt gun was a great aid in my project. It porformed flawlessly with both the 3 1/4" and 2 3/8 " nails.I was suprised at the power this gun had and had no problem driving nails. The weight of the gun concerned me before purchasing but was not bad when in use. It seems to be made well and I am anticipating many years of use. It compliments my large array of 20 volt DeWalt tools all of which I am quite pleased!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from cordless nailer Finally warmed up so I could try this out.I would not recommend trying to build a complete house with this nailer as it recycles slowly. But for specialty items such as installing rafters or anything up in the air it would work well.Always nice to not have to drag air hoses around while on ladders or scaffolding. It weighs as much or more than air nailers of the same size. All in all it is a nice tool but unless you have a use for it I would not recommend for hobbiests.Contractors I would recommend it [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I've been doing framing for years and have both hand-driven nails as well as used pneumatic nail guns, and this Dewalt cordless framing nailer is a real delight to use. Like a lot of cordless tools, where this framing nailer really shines is during intermittent use where portability is necessary. No more setup involved with hauling around the compressor and waiting for it to fill, no more hauling air hoses around and no oiling the gun. All you do is load a charged battery, in this case an included 4Ah battery, load the nails and go. I often work alone so this is perfect for the times that I need to reframe a door or window, button it all up and move on, or pull out the nailgun for a few shots and put it away, up in an attic or crawlspace doing blocking, and so on. Now, if I'm nailing down subfloor or shear panels all day in one area where I'm blowing through 10,000 nails in just a few hours, then I'll stick with my pneumatic gun, but for most other small jobs I'm going for the Dewalt cordless framing nailgun. So far it sets smooth shank nails well in doug fir dimensional lumber, but engineered or dense wood may need to be hammered afterward. Unsure because I haven't tried yet with an LVL or anything like that. The gun itself is somewhat bulky but for intermittent use its not bad, especially since its free and not dragging around an air hose. It has a nice beefy belt hook, easy to use switches to change between single and multi fire, and to diagnose and clear jams. All in all a good set, charger and soft case included. I'm quite happy with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Portable Nail Gun This nail gun is a most for all contractors. Dewalt brought the power of their framing air nailer and matched it with their 20v cordless tools. It can be heavy to handle but power of this gun is incredible. I have used this on multiple projects from nailing plywood sub floors to framing. This nail gun is definitely worth the money.
