Questions & Answers

Is the battery the same 20v as other 20v dewalt power tools

Asked by: Sparky
Yes, it's compatible with the rest of the 20V MAX line. I've used it with my blower and drill batteries. Just to clarify -- a 5Ah battery is not "more powerful" than a 3Ah battery; it simply provides longer runtime. 1 Ah (Amp-hour) means that (at least in theory) a battery can provide 1 amp of current for an hour, or 2 amps for 0.5 hours, or 6 amps for 10 minutes. If the tool consumes an average of 5A when it's running, then a 5Ah battery would provide 1 hour of runtime, while a 3Ah battery would give you 3Ah/5A = 36 minutes.

Is there a lock to keep on?

Asked by: Sparky
There is no way to keep the saw running unless you depressed the safety lever , which is on the left side of the handle not left-handed friendly

I notice it's called 20-Volt Max. does that mean it will work with a dewalt 18 volt battery?

Asked by: FreddieEskalotus
No. That is a different type of battery. You want the 5 amp/hour battery & charger.

20-Volt MAX Lithium-Ion Cordless 13 in. Brushless Dual Line String Grass Trimmer (Tool Only) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 2546.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Can be modified to work well I started getting the dreaded intermittent cutting out problem on mine... and I cleaned the motor screen on the top every time I used it per the directions. Turns out the motor itself overheats on hot days, so I attached a computer fan to the top of the motor housing, blowing down, and wired that to the contacts inside the tool with a lamp switch to control it. I'm sure I've voided the warranty, but wow, what a difference! Now I can do my whole yard (almost 1 acre) with a single 4amp battery, and it never cuts out. I also tossed the bump-set head and replaced it with a pivot trim head, that helps a lot. I run 2 .95 triangle-shaped strings in it, works great. Now that I got it working well, it's the best string trimmer I've ever had. I already was set up with 20v lithium Dewalt, so it made sense for me. Maybe they've fixed the newer models to stop the overheating motor.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from After a few good uses, trimmer line won't feed The non-removable head is a HORRIBLE concept. Grass and weed debris easily gets in the space above the head and the thing above it, and the "bump" doesn't work at all, and it will not turn at all like it is supposed to load line into it. Reloading the trimmer line into it is a very cumbersome two-person process. This is not the quality i was expecting from DeWalt. It worked great for 91 days and then it starting becoming just like all my other junk trimmers i've ever owned. I can't even attach a rino tuff head to it because it has a "screw you" non-removable head. DeWalt doesn't even make an alternative head for easier trimmer mechanisms, but if they did, it would probably not have means to attach on this trimmer. So I'm going to think twice about buying Dewalt again, despite all the batteries I've purchased, and despite the good use I've gotten from the corded reciprocating saw and the cordless drill I have. Poor design and a lost investment. I'm back to manually tugging out line after every 5 minutes of use.

Only used it a couple of time and it is quiet and does the job with easy, lots of power and well balanced. I'm 6'2" and find it easy and comfortable to use. Haven't had to add line yet so I can't say how hard or easy this process will be. Time will tell and it make take some time to tell because I've only had to bump it maybe 5-6 times to extend the line and I use it for trimming and edging. The line seems to be very good line. The power is surprising, I run it on low, haven't seen a reason to run it on the high speed. No more oil/gas mixtures or the pulling, multiple times, to start the edger or pulling out the electric line to use the weed eater. I've found the new Dewalt easy and effective to use for both weed eating and edging. Trimmed and edged 4 yards (in town home, average size yards) front and back on one battery. I would have completed about 5 yards with the gas edger with one tank of gas/oil mixture for edging only. 5 star now and time will tell if the 5 star remains however if it is as good as our other Dewalt tools I shouldn't have to change the rating.

Much cheaper than a replacement spool, but it IS very convenient to have two spool heads, so you don't need to take the time to pull apart and replace line, in the middle of a job. Directions: Pull out around 10-12 feet and snip, pinch the middle of that section into the notch dividing the two sections of the spool, wind the two "sides" in opposite directions on the top and bottom section of the spool. Pinch the last 1 1/2 feet of either end into one of the top and bottom notches to hold in place, feed those ends thorough the holes as you fit the spool on, and pull them out of the notches when you have the cap locked on. Couldn't find directions on how to do this, but not as hard as people are letting on. You just need to use the notches to hold the line in place, so it doesn't unravel and get messy. Easy Peasy. Good luck

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stops working Bought just over a year ago to use instead of my gas trimer and it stopped working in the second season of use. I was using it to trim grass and lost the high speed and thought the battery may be dead so changed the battery to a fully charge one and it still acts as if battery is dead. Switching from HI or LO makes no difference either. Can only assume something burnt out already. Of course I can not find the receipt so no warranty with the local service center and they want to charge for the diagnostic and then still have the cost of the repair which means it could cost as much as a new one would just to fix it. Very disappointed in the product and the cost to fix it. DeWalt's warranty is lacking to say the least and I do not recommend this trimmer at all. I will go back to using my gas trimmer again. I was skeptical to switch from gas and get an electric battery trimmer to begin with. I wanted to be more environmentally minded but this experience with this product unfortunately sealed the deal for me and I will never again replace a gas powered tool with a battery or electric tool.

Assembly was a breeze, a "cave man" could do it. Even though I've only used it 3 months I can tell this is the best tool I HAVE EVER USED. Can't say how it will hold up, but if it has the quality of my other Dewalt tools, I will be pleased for many years. I can't understand why I used the old gas trimmer so long. It does everything the gas trimmer does with so much more ease of operation. I have a very large "Homestead" to maintain, (3 city lots), and I like my lawn to be "manicured", not just mowed. I edge all the sidewalks, the driveway, along the street, and trim around several trees and the fence in back and around the house and flower beds. I replaced the factory trimmer head with the Oregon "Gator SpeedLoad Head", which fit perfectly. (See Photo) This is the best trimmer head out there. You can replace the cartridge in 30 seconds, honestly, and keep on trimming. No winding string, no tangles, just trimming! The blower is perfect for cleaning my garage, sidewalks and driveway. Not quite the force of my old gas blower, but well suited for most projects. Of course they are both quiet, compared to my old gas rigs. I can get out and work early in the morning and the neighbors don't complain. I have several Dewalt tools and I can honest say, Dewalt really showed themselves this time. I'm going for the chain saw next! By the way, for those folks who say you cannot edge with this trimmer, "hogwash". (Look at my photos) Just wear eye protection and long legged pants. I do anyway, have you seen my legs? (Photo not enclosed) If possible, I would give the trimmer 10 stars out of 5.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great tool until it breaks! I've never left a review for anything before this but I wanted to warn people. I've been through 2 of these and they both broke within a month. I love Dewalt tools and really wanted to love this string trimmer. I do a lot of trimming on our property and already own 2 Stihl professional trimmers ($300.00+). The Stihl trimmers will power through even small trees and I love them, but they really work on my elbows, especially on the side of hills. I own a black and Decker battery powered trimmer and it's great for trimming around the house but gets bogged down easily. The Dewalt was the perfect balance of the 2 and I already owned several batteries so what could be better? I think they over-engineered this thing with the 2 speeds because I feel like a gear has stripped. Both trimmers broke in the same way- no matter what setting it's on it spins very slowly and has no power. What good is the 2 year warranty when there are no service centers where I live and I have to pay to ship it?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Major fail by Dewalt I got my first one two years ago. That one failed due to a common problem of the barring's failing. Ok, so I bought this unit. It has a different head. This head froze up after very little use. I have tried to clean it out but I cannot fully remove all the grass and such caught under the spindle. That leaves me with a trimmer that works great but when I need more line I have to remove the line cap cover, pull out more line, and put the cap cover back on. I have other DeWalt battery power products including a 40V light duty chain saw and a 40V blower. They are great. This product? No. Don't buy it. You will regret your decision just as I do.
