20-Volt MAX XR Lithium-Ion Cordless Brushless 3-1/4in. Planer (Tool-Only)

This planer comes with the guide fence, an alignment plate for replacing the blades, and a bag. The tool so far is quick to cut, produces a very smooth finish and throws chips like nobodies business! I have used it for some short test runs to simulate trimming out a door, the battery seems to last a very long time. I have not found a solution for capturing the ships nor replacement blades locally. Was hoping Home Depo would stock them.

excellent tool, works very well. light, strong and comfortable. the only negative point I found was the machine did not have an appropriate box. in fact I miss the boxes, almost all the machines do not come with boxes, only bags, which I do not even use. This DEWALT planer is a great tool, but beware that it is a bare tool – no battery, no charger, no storage bag or case and no dust bag. Honestly if not for the lack of the dust / shavings bag, I’d give it 5 stars. I like the brushless motor which is very powerful, not too loud, more efficient, runs cooler and should last longer compared to a regular non-brushless. It leaves a smooth clean surface after the first pass. There are two blades compared to other planers that only use one. There is also an on-board storage spot for an additional two blades (sold separately). There is also an on-board Allen key for blade adjustment / replacement. The planer is easy to use and is comfortable in the hands. It has the classic ergonomic rubberized handle, same as on my DEWALT drill. On the front there is the round adjustment knob with precise markings. While on the back under side there is a small kickstand that prevents the planer sitting flat to protect the blades. The kickstand can also be folded away if not needed. The bottom of the planner is a smooth machined aluminum with a V-shaped groove in the middle for chamfer cuts. It makes deeper cuts however than what the adjustment is set to – so beware! The exhaust / debris port is on the right side. The planner should work with all 20V DEWALT batteries. I have a few different sizes from my other DEWALT tools and they fit just fine. The safety switch on both sides which is convenient for righties and lefties or depending on how it needs to be held. The safety switch needs to be pushed down instead of pressed inwards like a button. I needed to trim my door a bit since the humidity and the old house shifting made it stick in the frame. I am very pleased with the quality and performance of this planer. It is a pleasure to use just like the rest of my DEWALT tools. Having no cord to deal with is nice especially when a plug isn’t always near. I wish a dust /shavings bag was included. I had to clean up a mess afterwards which made it less enjoyable. Still is a great planer though!

The DCP580B Hand planer is a tool only, it does not come with a battery pack or charger. I choose this one because I already have several 20V batteries and chargers. The nice feature it has is has a brush-less motor that should last for a lifetime. The motor speed is 15,000 RPM with no load or with load when making those deep cuts. I did several different deep cut and found the RPM did not change. It a powerful motor that can stand up to the challenge you give it. It only weighs 5 lbs 8 oz without the Rabbit Fence or Battery. One nice feature when you let go of power switch the motor almost stops immediately that stop the blade. The front aluminum shoes has a machined groove to allow you to make chamfer cut. The motor and blade is driven with a Poly-V belt to provide the belt from slipping and will last longer. This tool has been great for planning my wooden doors. The unit comes with a 3 year Warranty Limited and 1 year free service. Product was made in China. Great product.

I am a moderately experienced DIY, and do some carpentry work that involves installing new doors, trim and cabinetry. Most often, these jobs require me to plane surfaces to get a tight fit, and a clean-looking appearance. I find that few things beat using an electric hand planer for getting this done efficiently. I used to rely on a corded electric planer, as I’ve found these to have sufficient power and the muscle needed to cleanly pare down large swaths of soft or hard wood. But when trimming doors down to size, the electric cord/extension cord can get in the way. So I was pleased to get this cordless version. I am pleasantly surprised by the power of this unit, which I find is as equal to the task of plowing through hard or soft wood as any corded unit I’ve used. And best of all, I enjoy the light weight, which makes it easier to guide the unit, even when reaching over to trim a longer piece. It made chamfering the corner of a 4 x 4 effortless (see picture). A fence was also included, to use for making rabbet cuts. I had never used a fence on a planer for this purpose before, but after giving it a try (see picture) I can see a number of uses for this in cabinet construction, and other decorative things. The adjustment knobs, and trigger were easy to see and access (see picture), and a small plastic “kickstand” at the rear shoe (see picture) suspends the blade from surfaces when at rest. The front and main handles were comfortable to grip. The one item that was not included was a dust bag. If you’ve ever used a planer, you know that after just a short period of use, you can easily fill a small bucket with wood chips and sawdust, so I’m not sure why the manufacturer expects that you should come prepared to use a broom and dustpan. And although I wouldn’t be keen on attaching my vacuum to the chip ejection port, it didn’t fit anyway. Attachment to a vacuum defeats the very reason for using this battery powered tool – which is the flexibility of not being tethered to a cord or hose. Every power planer I’ve ever purchased came with a dust bag included. At the time I write this, I am unable to locate a dust bag to fit this planer, either for purchase domestically online or at a bricks and mortar location. Call me crazy. The 3-year tool warranty is a plus, with the standard exclusions for normal wear and tool abuse. I think this tool will hold up very well for the long term. This is a great little machine, but I would be reluctant to recommend it to a friend until/unless a dust bag is either provided with the tool or available for separate purchase.
