Does the new flex volt batteries work in this mower ?

Yes, they probably do. If you buy it you can try it out.

Will this accept theb9 ah battery?

Definitely most likely.

Does this run as a 20 volt, in parallel, or as 40 volt, in series? And if in parallel, can I use only one battery?

This mower is a 40 volt mower, however, is setup to run to 20 volt batteries, in order to achieve the required 40 volts. It's worth mentioning that there are 2 separate mowers available. A 20 volt X 2 batteries, which this one is, and the 40 volt, which would only use one battery. To also address other questions that might come up, because it did with me, about the battery situation. The 60 volt, flexvolt batteries, with run times of 12, 9, and 6 amp hours, will all fit inside this 20x2 volt mower together, side by side. I kinda feel like the other battery questions can be answered with a quick look at Dewalt's video's about their batteries. Lots of folks doing youtube video's about this. And to answer your last question, no, you can not only use one battery, even if it is the 60v battery. The reason is, that the slot that the batteries go into, will automatically line the battery up to 20 volts. The slot is different on a 60 volt tool.

Almost none. Just unfolding the handle and popping in the batteries.

what does it weigh? muzz

Asked by muzz March 28, 2018

Answers

The whole package is nearly 78lbs according to the spec. Take out the bag, batteries, charger and box and you're probably looking at around 60 to 65lbs. The handle folds out of the way and the two black carry handles on opposing ends of the deck make it easy to pick up if you need to lift it onto a truck bed.

Does it use a single normal-length blade, or two short blades?

Asked by FloridaMower April 1, 2018
5
Answers

It has a single-piece blade that spins about the center of the deck so there is a blade every 180 degrees. It cuts very evenly for me but my lawn is fairly flat and even.

The run time is listed as 25 minutes, which seems very short. Is this accurate?

Does the unit allow adjustments for different height levels of mowing??

After less than one year of owning this mower it quite working; used it for one summer mowing once per month; 4 times use). Bought this after reading many poor reviews thinking others just had bad fortune. Everything I own is Dewalt... nothing but problems after deciding to invest in tools ($3k) and one name brand since my family grew up on Dewalt. This is an old brand sold out to poor foreign manufacturers. I have other tools with many problems as well. Poor customer support too. Don’t waste your time.

Mower arrived today after a two week wait to have it delivered online. UPS delivered it to my house and the carton was beat up pretty well as it came off the truck. After taking it out of the carton and charging up the batteries, I proceeded to mow some grass with it. The battery life is not what they advertised for the two batteries fully charged. They state that the run time for fully charged set of batteries should be 25 min which is a few minutes more that what mine will do with fully charged brand new battery packs (and I am cutting grass that is nowhere near the thickness of a cultured lawn... we just mow what turns green on the sand plain here in central MN.) After going thru a mowing cycle with the batteries being used up I took the mower up on the apron of my shed where I could blow the dust off it before storing it for the next use and noticed that the rear wheels were pigeontoed because the rear axle is bent at both ends. I took pix of the issue and and carton as well before calling customer service (who refer to themselves as Bostich Customer Service.) They provided no relief to my problem, but would only state that since the unit is not more than a month old take it to a local store and have it replaced directly. This really makes me sad to think that the mower was ordered on April 20, received on May 4, and now I have just two weeks (rather than their standard full month) to get to the local store for an even exchange amid this COVID-19 business. I have had really good luck with their products up until this one and right now am not feeling it for this one. I might just have to get a refund?

Great for my small yard & then some ! !
Customer review from dewalt.com logo
I have a small yard this was a great way to get rid of the Honda gas mower (that we just bought a year ago, lol) and with the batteries that came with, it lasts about 3 to 4 time before in my case charging is needed. I do wish I had the option of a bare tool or different battery options since I already have the 20 and 60-volt DeWalt systems. Over all it is what I was looking for. Don’t think that your going to get this mower and mow a 2-acer lot that’s 2 feet high. I don’t think that is what this or any battery mower is designed to do yet give them a few years they may get there.

Fathers Day gift, works great.
Customer review from dewalt.com logo
6-2019, Fathers Day gift replaced my old gas mower and Stihl 2 stroke trimmer. Was concerned about the battery life in the other reviews, but decided to give it a try as I have other DeWalt tools. Yard measures about 35x35, or say two 30'x20' sections, equaling about 1200sq'. (This is about 3/100ths of an acre (.027acre). Suburban home with typical front and back yard. For reference, 1/4 acre (.25) = 10,980sq' or about 100'x100' lawn). I don't know what it is rated for, but with the 2 supplied 20v 5ah batteries in it, my son mowed the lawn in 20 minutes, and still had 2 battery lights left out of 3, indicating it only used 1/3rd of the capacity to do a typical home lawn. It completely filled the bag, FULL, and emptied like a breeze, where my old one was always tough to empty. With batteries, it weighs about the same as my Craftsman gas mower, but pushes easily. Quiet, no gas or oil, handle folds easily, and I love that you can store it upright, on end, as it is made to stand up. In addition to the mower, the new 20v Dewalt trimmer is lighter than my gas Stihl, no blue smoke and oil, and trims the whole yard and still shows a near FULL Charge. It seems easier to handle and more precise near the flowers, etc., so the wife loves it if I don't cut the flowers off... Overall, presently surprised, hopefully the batteries will last for years like my other Dewalt tools have, only time will tell. Believe for the typical suburban homeowner, the supplied 20v 5ah batteries will be more than enough, again, we had 2 battery bars left out of 3 when finished mowing the front and back yard, about 20 minutes and 1 week growth of lawn after rain that week so it was pretty long. Filled large bag catcher completely. Listed my trusty gas mower, and pro grade Stihl trimmer on craigslist and sold in 1 day, so no looking back now...:)

WOW!! The mower is very well thought out and designed with several superior features. First is the easy deck height adjustment with one lever. Second is the easy start button on the ergonomic handle. Third is the easy fold handle. Fourth is the lifting handles on the deck front and rear. Fifth is the easy view power gauge on the back of the motor. Sixth is the quiet motor. Seventh is the motor which powers through thick and tall grass without loosing rpm. Eighth is a 1 hour battery life in thick Florida grass using the 20v 9ah Flexvolt (about 1/2 acre). There are some of the areas that could be improved in my opinion. First is the rear wheels could be 3 inches larger for easier turning like the standard gas mower. Second is the deck and blade could be 4 inches larger to match the standard gas mower. Third is the handle could be about 8 inches shorter for easier tight area navigation to match the standard gas mower. As you will see in my picture, I have the best of the yard equipment and this mower fits extremely well in the DeWalt line up! My rating is 5 stars with an A++.

One month review (have used it three times so far) Packaging and what's in the box: The mower comes badly packaged in a thin cardboard box: I would advise shipping to the store so you can exchange it on the spot if need be. Mine arrived fine however but the box was practically dilapidated. In the box you get a single bay charger, two 20V 5Ah batteries (that were on one bar each on arrival), a dongle that needs to plugged in for it to work (it has a string on it so I tied it to the handle) a bag for collecting clippings, a stopper in the back for mulching and the mower itself assembled and ready to go. Mower features: Behind the battery compartment there is a three-bar indicator for each battery. The handle can easily fold down out of the way and the mower can be stood up for optimal storage (and since it's electric it doesn't leak any fluids like a gas and oil mower) the handles also have two positions when folded out offering different heights. Start the mower (with the dongle inserted) by holding down the large yellow button, then pulling and holding back the yellow handle bar and it starts: you can release the button at this point and start mowing, if you release the bar it will shut off immediately. It also has a handle on either end of the deck, so when folded it's easy to pick it up. At ~75lbs it's not light, but not too bad either to lift up to tailgate height. The deck's cutting height is easily adjustable with a nice, large handle and I believe has six positions. My lawn: So you know what I have to work with: my lot is about a 1/4 acre (~10,700sqft), minus house, driveway, patio and a couple of features I have probably around 7,500sqft of mowing area. That area is all flat and relatively level with Bermuda grass we keep watered so the grass is healthy and thick. Mowing experience (the bad): When I mowed my front yard (which is smaller, probably 1,500sqft) it was overgrown and slightly damp. On a full charge I couldn't finish the front, in fact, I suspect the batteries overheated before I finished. I have another pair of 20V 5Ah batteries that finished the last shred. To note: I forgot to take the plug out the back until halfway through (I realized halfway through because the mower would shut off, either because it was getting clogged and/or because it was too wet, I have read it has a shut-off feature), so the motor worked double-time to chop up the thick, tall (8" I estimate), damp grass that was getting hung up in the deck and I had it set to the second lowest cutting height. Mowing experience (the good): My backyard was different: much larger, but we mowed when the grass was drier, we hadn't let it get overgrown, I didn't have the plug in that was clogging up the deck and I raised the cutting depth to the third setting. I was able to mow the whole ~6,000sqft in the back with little battery to spare. If I want to mow the front and the back, as long as they haven't gotten too out of control, I can do both easily with two pairs of 20V 5Ah batteries or just use one pair for the back, let them charge for ~40 minutes and finish the front. Performance, maintenance: It is easy to push and maneuver the mower, has plenty of power and while it doesn't self-propel; it isn't really needed either. Since the mower is electric it's quiet, no need to worry about maintaining it or having to deal with gas or oil only a blade you may have to sharpen occasionally as with any mower and batteries to keep charged, batteries that work in your DeWalt drill, chainsaw, weed whacker, etc. and vice-versa. Final impressions: All in all, I am very satisfied with the mower and while DeWalt says it's good for a 1/4 acre (which I have) I very much doubt that, at least with the included batteries. If you have additional 20V 5Ah or larger batteries and need to mow more than 6,000sqft of lawn then I would say you're good to go. In any case, just be aware that your battery life will diminish greatly if you are dealing with healthy, thick grass that's already too tall. Highlights: The good: + Quiet + Easy to push and maneuver + Carry handles + Folds up easy and out of the way + Battery indicator on the mower itself easily visible The notable: * Easily adjustable deck height settings * Easy two-step start * Two positions for the bars/handle/control? * Bag included, deck plug thing included as well * Two 20v 5Ah batteries included (can take Flexvolt 60v too I am told, not sure if it can take the smaller 20V 1.5Ah batteries, but they wouldn't last long even if it does) * Has a dongle that must be inserted in order to run (I leave mine in and tie it to the handle) * Not self-propelled * Includes one single bay charger The bad: - For a big area you need more batteries than what it comes with - The batteries can overheat if the motor has to work too hard - The packaging is horribly ill-conceived

Fell short on the battery life...sad
Customer review from dewalt.com logo
I have a garage full DeWALT tools and only buy DeWALT tools. Never thought I would be disappointed with DeWALT, until now. Luckily I had extra 20v MAX / 5AH XR batteries from the other DeWALT products to get the mowing done without having to wait for a full charge of the batteries you sent with my mower. The only downside, is that I have to charge the two first batteries, so I will have a battery to use on my DeWALT yard trimmer and leaf blower products to get the job done. I have bought two extra 60v Flex Volt / 9AH batteries to see how this will help perform, but I am sure that was the marketing plan to help make more money. It's a great mower, but I will be letting people know they will need to invest in 4 extra batteries. I have added a photo of my back garden to show everyone the small size of it. The sad part is I cant cut that on one charge. I get about 60% done, then the batteries die.

Awesome mower, but poor packing. My wheels were all bent out of alignment and the mower has a dent in the side. Dewalt did an awful job with the packing to protect the mower. As promised, I got about 23 minutes for the two times I've mowed my lawn now. The mower does run on the Flexvolt batteries and even advertises with a stick on the bottom inside the compartment the batteries are placed. I have yet to use my Flexvolt batteries at 6.0 amps when running at 20v. I definitely recommend the mower. Another important note, the mower runs strong the whole way up until the batter is depleted, then the mower just shuts off... not a noise from an attempt to start once the mower shuts off and the batteries are depleted. What I like most about the mower is that it super light and easy to maneuver when turning, etc. Other perks are the integration into my current Dewalt tool set (20v battery system) and it folds up and is right at home with my table saw and miter saw in the garage. One other note about design, the rear discharge port clogs easily. However, I have yet to have owned a mower that the discharge port didn't clog up during a mow.
