        Answer This Question

A:  There is a company in Canada that makes aftermarket tips for use on vinyl siding. Sidingtips.com or something like that? The gun by itself would set the nails too tight for vinyl and it would be hard to like up in the nailing flange. But ? with it!

            Jams after a few nails
Was exited to buy this to do siding. Would only shoot 2 or 3 nails then it would either stop shooting any , shoot 2 nails at the same time or jam the firing pin all together! I Tried everything! Putting less nails in it (incase it was a feeding problem), tried opening the gun after 2 nails to make sure it was feeding properly ,tried cutting the first wire so it doesn’t hang up And still was not working properly! I picked up a cheaper gun that runs off of a compressor and never jammed!

              Convenient and powerful but heavy
I was very impressed with this nailer. The first thing you’ll notice when you unpack it is that it is a beast. It comes in at 8.2 pounds with the included 2.0ah battery and a coil of 1” roofing nails (by my scale). Loading the nails is pretty easy and you are ready to shoot. On the nose of the nailer is a wheel to control depth of drive. Even when on the lowest setting it embedded the heads into my test stud. I also tried it on a roof mockup of OSB and it worked better (see photo). Battery life was terrific, I shot over 100 nails (1” electro-galvanized) and it still showed full power (3 green bars on battery). Rapid fire was not a problem the nailer, it never hesitated. It is quite heavy. I don’t see it for all day use. But on a small repair job or on that precariously steep roof, working without a hose is very convenient. I’m sure they will continue to get lighter. But this first generation DeWalt roofing nailer is almost a home run. B+

I'm am totally satisfied with this gun. I just did a 40 sq roof 12 on 12 pitch and not having a hose wanting to yank the gun off the roof or getting caught on things is great. My only negative is that it doesn't take nails longer than 1 1/2 and when doing caps you need a longer nail

Everything you need for a weekend on the roof. If you do any roofing or have a project coming up and don't relish the thought of lugging around an air hose all over the place, then this might be your perfect tool. This nailer is ideal for smallish type jobs and repairs. There is no compressor, hose, or a gas cartridge to power it. This is completely cordless and will accept many different sizes of the DeWalt battery packs. Just pop a battery on an you can get to it. It even has Bump mode for better nailing efficiency. I love that you can drive roofing nails from 3/4 in. to 1-3/4 in. The nail drum holds 120 coil nails. The nailer is pretty heavy at just under 7 pounds, so you will get a workout. Overall it appears to be well designed and it fits well in the hand. It meets OSHA safety standards and would be a welcome addition to a work site.

SUMMARY: A NICE NAILER THAT MAY EVEN WORK FOR THE PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND: I do a lot of DIY work using roofing nails. The chance to evaluate the DeWalt 20 Volt MAX roofing nailer was too good to pass up. FIT AND FINISH: This tool has the same fit and finish as my other DeWalt tools. It has a hefty solid feel. FEATURES: From the Home Depot page, with my comments as appropriate. • Cordless convenience ideal for service repairs and small jobs. There are absolutely no hoses, compressors, or gas cartridges required. Its 100% battery-powered so the pro can show up and get to work right away. o YES, YES, YES, YES, YES! Grab the nailer, throw a battery in it, shoot some nails, call it a day. This is the reason for me as a DIYer I am going cordless whenever possible! The first DIY project I used it on was to put up some rain diverting plastic sheeting. I got the entire job done in less time than it would have taken me to rig up compressed air to the location! • The 20-Volt MAX 15° Coil Roofing Nailer can drive the full range of roofing fasteners from 3/4 in. to 1-3/4 in. Get the job done quickly and efficiently with bump actuation mode and tool-free depth adjustment that provides precise nail placement. o I bought a case of 1 ¼” nails as that’s the most common length in use and had minimal trouble shooting them into dimensional lumber. The bump feature is almost a requirement when shooting shingles and I would not have gotten it without it. I found the depth adjustment easy to use but couldn’t tell if it was changing set depth for my first job (more on this later in the operation section.) • Ideal for asphalt shingle repairs and small jobs o My first job was shooting plastic sheathing and it worked great. I lent it to a professional roofer and he said it shot asphalt as well as his air-powered nailer. • Drives 15-degree coil roofing nails from 3/4 in. to 1-3/4 in. L. o I only used 1 ¼” nails. The pro roofer that used it also shoot 1 ¼” nails. From the easy it shot them I’m confident that it could shoot longer nails as well. • Brushless motor for increased runtime and durability o Almost the industry standard for cordless tools now. Seemed to run fine. • Bump mode for efficiency and productivity o As before, a requirement for a roofing nailer…and it worked fine. • Tool-free nail tray easily adjusts to accommodate the full range of roofing nails o The tray is a little bit flimsy feeling, but once locked in it there were not issues. • Tool-free depth adjustment wheel for precise nailing o Was easy to use, but in my test firing I couldn’t always tell if it was shooting to the right depth. I didn’t have any overshoots, and the couple of under shoots were probably due to knots in the wood. • Tool-free stall release lever to return driver blade in event of a jam o We saw it, and the lever moved ok. But we never had a jam. • Belt hook for convenience o Didn’t put it on. Probably won’t until I need to. • 15° canister holds up to 120 wire collated roofing nails o A standard coil. • Ergonomic handle design for better control and comfort o Didn’t feel much different than my other roofing nailers. • Ideal for service repairs and small jobs o I completely agree that small, quick jobs are the perfect thing for this nailer. OPERATION: The nailer itself operates on the bump fire method. Hold the trigger, let the motor spin up, place the nose of the nailer down where you want the nail, then press down until it fires. This tool is HEAVY. Up to twice the weight of my airless nailers, about 8 pounds. But the convenience of no compressor or hose makes it worth hauling the weight for small jobs. For my DIY jobs it is more than workable. NOTES FROM A PRO ROOFER: My neighbor was having a new roof put on. I let them borrow the nailer to try it out. His comments: • It is twice the weight of my air nailers. • The rhythm is different because it doesn’t have the recoil of an air powered nailer. He got used to it and was able to speed up to about the same rate as his helper using an air nailer. • It shot almost a full square on a ¾ charged 2.0Ah battery. • He had NO misfires or hangs. • He said it would be great on small repairs or steep pitched roofs where an air hose is clumsy and dangerous. • Overall he was VERY IMPRESSED. SUMMARY: A great nailer for small jobs, sites with no power, and steep roofs. PROS: Powerful, good battery life. CONS: Heavy

                dewalt roofing nailer
Used this gun on a job yesterday and although it was raining on us most of the day. The gun did a good job of keeping up mostly, it did jam a good bit through the day so i would recomend keeping a nail punch on hand for that but i do believe it was because of the length nail i was using was to small. If I go on another job with it I would not recommend using anything smaller than a 2” roofing nail because the wire on the nail does not come off of the nail cleanly and jams up the firing pin. All in all its a great tool if your having to do a steep roof and dont wanna deal with a hose but there is a significant amount of weight to the gun itself. But it is a fast system and good for many different scenarios. Just seems like dewalt has some bugs to fix with this system.

We used this gun on a 10'x16' roof section with step flashing and 4 skylights, perimeter flashing, and roofed used laminated shingles. What I liked most about this nailer is that it felt like a normal air powered roofing gun. Due to the nature of this section we had to use 3/4" nails. It fed them perfectly with 0 jams, maybe 8 nails went sideways which is better than average with short nails, it confidently sunk 1 1/4" coil nails on the ridge and worked great. I roofed about 2/3rd of the roof before depleting a 4 amp/hr battery which was fine, I had lots of flashing to nail through. The spool up is quick and just a tap of the trigger continues the spooling. I could lay down five or six nails in just over second or so no problem. It hits hard and confident. I had to dial it down a little so it wouldn't over penetrate the shingles when the sun was out. So nice not having a hose and compressor to deal with. Rubber bumpers alleviate sliding. Loads and feeds like any other roofing gun. You still need to wear ear plugs. The nail basket door popped open a few times but the only real negative is no shingle gauge, I realize this is a repair and top out gun but still come on guys let us have a gauge. I guess the bigger compliment is that it just worked and wasn't fussy. I left in alone on the roof for 3 hours in the rain and when I came back and it kept right on working. Thanks DeWalt I've been waiting like 15 years for this gun.

Of course you’ll pay for this new efficient technology. This kit is listed at $400 (at the time of this review), which includes 2 batteries, charger, and soft bag. That’s double of a many pneumatic coil nailers. And it is quite heavy. I don’t see it for all day use.
