DeWalt makes high quality tools, both powered and hand tools, for the professional worker. This 4 lb engineering sledge hammer is no exception. The mild carbon steel head weighs a full 4 lbs and sports 2 different faces. One face is a standard, smooth, broad face which is great for driving surveying stakes and rebar. The opposite face has a unique profile with numerous cuts that DeWalt claims concentrates the force of its strikes making it effective at breaking concrete, asphalt and other hard materials encountered during demolition work. The handle is made of tough lightweight fiberglass with a comfortable molded grip. Where the handle joins the steel head DeWalt has added an addition layer of a tough material to reinforce the handle where it is most apt to break. I found this small sledge to be a pleasure to use and works exactly as designed. It easily drove 1” x 1” sharpened hardwood stakes into hard ground. I used the breaking face to crack up some old asphalt in order to expose the earth underneath. This is a great 4 lb sledge that I would certainly buy again. It is made in Vietnam.

I have had the DeWalt 4LB Engineers Hammer for about 2 weeks. I have used it several times. It is lacking balance because the fiberglass handle is a bit too light, so it is more top heavy than hammers with a solid hickory handle. The bonus of the fiberglass handle is durability abd it absorbs miss strikes. The head of the hammer has dual faces: the normal flat face and on the opposite end it has a ridge down the middle. The ridge allows you to concentrate your striking power. I see this useful for breaking cement or masonry. This hammer is solidly constructed. I have no worries about the head of the hammer separating from the handle. Overall an excellent hammer and I would recommend it to anyone.
