How do you work a hand planer if you have 6” or wider. Is there an adjustment to adjust to The previously planned area?

Asked by Don September 15, 2020

Answer

My advice is to buy a 12 inch stationary planer. It's next to impossible to do a surface that wide with a hand planer. I finally purchased the DeWalt 12 inch planer and I am very pleased with the results.

Great Planer
I had some old beams that I wanted to restain in a different color and using a sander didn’t get the old stain off. Using this planer took the old stain off in one or two passes. More labor intensive than the Dewalt Thickness Planner but for a fraction of the cost, this did a great job. Its nice that you can adjust how much you can take off in a pass as well.

Useful planer and easy to use
Absolute beginner and I was able to figure it out and use it to make custom transition pieces from our slightly raised tiled kitchen to the hardwood in the rest of the house. I will be finding other applications for it!!

could be better
I'm replacing my trusty corded planer. My complaint is the sole has a milled surface adds lots of texture to the surface that should glide on the wood. I see no reason for this and the curved striations both increase friction and also deflect the planer as they go at an angle to the direction of travel. The only tools in my shop that have like this are surfaces that are designed to create friction. The sole should be smooth. I've become a "Team Yellow" with a shop full of dewalt tools. This base really is a problem.

Does a great job
I needed a planner to clean up done wooden beams that had a dark stain. Tried sanding the beams first, but wouldn’t get a clean look. Bought this planner and was super easy to use and cleaner up the beams in two passes....wish I bought it sooner.

I have other Dewalt tools. For me, they are the best power tools. I was helping my son with a project. The PT lumber he wanted to use was cupped. My DeWalt portable planner saved the day. Using my Dewalt tools I have built 2 cottages and added a large addition to my former home. DeWalt power tools work for me. The photo is of my current cottage built with Dewalt Tools. User friendly
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’m a professional carpenter and I don’t use this tool every single day so I couldn’t justify the little extra const of cordless but when i do need this it’s invaluable. I used it today to level out some cabinets prepping for a countertop that needs to be perfecly flat. I use it to bevel custom threshold. It’s the tool that always gets me out of a bind. Easily adjustable, user friendly. Couldn’t ask for more.

This is a very nice power planer. Perfect for putting a bevel on new wooden doors. Comes with a fence. You can special order a vacuum fitting for the chip exhaust port. The dial-a-depth knob works great...allowing small incremental increases in cutting depth. I used the planer to put a bevel on the lid to my Halloween coffin. It did great, including cutting cross-grain.

Picked up one of these today on an impulse buy to work on the chess board I've been building. It works great! I think the cutting blades need some fine tune adjusting, but I cannot complain about how well it worked right out of the box.

Works great except. . . . .
Smoothed out a small table top with this planer and it worked great except for the massive mess that it made. I was doing this outside and my back driveway was just covered in shavings. Yes this is to be expected, but to charge I think it's $90 for a dust bag for this is ridiculous. For over $200 with the bag I'd rather put that toward the DEWALT Model # DW734 15 Amp 12-1/2 in. Corded Planer. Now I know that you can do everything with that, but for what I'm doing I'd be better off with that. Hope this helps.

Cut above the rest
This was the perfect tool for the job, had to plane 16 pieces of 2"x 15"x 10' white pine for cabinet counters.
