Questions & Answers

What’s the maximum wheel size I can charge with this?

Asked by: Jason
14-inch wheels are charged up pretty fast. 20-inch wheels are going to take a little longer. I haven't gone bigger than 56-inches...in fact...still charging and it's been 2 weeks now.

The charger does an OK job charging as long as there is a charge on the battery. Sounds weird right... read on... If the battery is totally dead it will not detect a battery and therefore won't start charging. This is a problem if you have left a draw on a battery on a piece of equipment unaware for some time. On a totally dead battery it would not even initialize the 200 amp engine start. There has to be some charge on the battery to even start the 200 amp jump start feature which I never got 200 amps out of it anyway. I had to use a smaller charger to get some charge on the battery before I could use this one. After charging the battery enough to use this battery charger, it would only put out 70 amps max for a brief second then immediately drop to high 30's low 40's. On the regular charge cycle it did eventually charge the battery completely and the float switch appears to work ok. It's hard for me to recommend a battery charger that wont initialize on a totally discharged battery.

On brand new car off lot with 7 miles in it shows my alternator bad. But it works perfectly fine. On my 99 ram shows the same. It also works fine. Maybe I don't know how to use it. Keep your receipt and you be the judge.

Bought this unit because of the claims of "Battery Reconditioning" but unfortunately it doesn't work as well as expected. The batteries are 1-1/2 year old 'Interstate AGM' on my diesel truck, knowing the plow draws on them pretty hard, they don't typically last as long as projected. Originally I thought it was due to the alternator or a parasitic draw but after having the alternator replacement and a thorough inspection of the vehicle, it was made clear that the problem stems from the batteries alone. In hopes of saving a couple hundred dollars (per battery) I purchased this unit, only to find disappointment. Now I have a $230 overgrown trickle charger and the opportunity to purchase another new pair of batteries to complete the season. This hasn't been one of Dewalt's finest products in my opinion.

I really wanted to like this charger, but there are a few critical flaws which are forcing me to take it back to the store and look for another option. I will say the quality of the fit, finish, and components used is top notch and the cooling fans provide more than adequate heat management. I love the 70 amp charge rate and automatic trickle down but that's where the positive ends. My issue with this charger is the control system behind it, partly because of the limitation of polarity sensing chargers not being able to charge very weak batteries but more so the fact that there is no option for manual control. Suppose you wanted to charge a battery at 2ah, with this charger you simply can't because there isn't a charge rate selection which may prove problematic for power-sports batteries. Add manual control of charge rate and voltage (6, 12, 24) and you've got a winner, but until those features are added this charger is a dud.
