Yes, it helps very much that the tap/drill bit has sides from which it can get more torque from the driver, where as “traditional” taps are all round and slip.

The smaller sizes; 8-32, 10-24, 10-32, break too easily in thicker steel. They may be okay for softer and thin metals, but not for structural steel shapes such as angle or channel. I even tried the 8-32 size with an adjustable impact driver set on its lowest power and still broke the drill tap, even after drilling a pilot hole. I didn't try the 12-24 or 1/4"-20 sizes, so can't comment on those.
