Questions & Answers

I've tried the answer that someone gave for installing the blade. It doesn't lock and it doesn't retract all the way.

Any other ways to install the blade
Asked by: Ks
Slide the the sliding button all the way forward so if there was a blade in there it would be fully extended. Hold the black skinny button on the side down. Put the new blade in the end and make sure it goes in all the way, so it looks like the picture. If it doesn't go in all the way, don't force it and hurt yourself. Just jiggle it a little and pull it in and out a little, and use a !ow amount of pressure to push it in. Sometimes some dirt can jam it up, or maybe the angle you are trying to put it in is a little off.

How do you change the blade?

Asked by: Wendy
There is a yellow button on the top/back of the handle (upper right yellow square in the product image). Push that in and the handle drops down revealing the spare blades.

I just bought this and there are no instructions. How do you change or put a blade in?

Asked by: WF
About drove me crazy. I think they out-clevered their own customers. Anyway, slide the blade extender all the way forward. Depress the blade release button on the side. Slide a new blade into the nose of the tool. Let go of the blade release button. The blade should now be ready to use.

Customer Reviews

Metal Retractable Utility Knife is rated 2.0 out of 5 by 40.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good knife. Not hard to use at all! Very simple to use. And change blades out. side lever depress and slide in new blades. Blade storage just push the yellow button on back and it swings down. Love it. The retract it the only problem I had. Going to try a dab of grease others have suggested. No rocket science here just simple well made knife. Directions could help those challenged at using tools.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Worked after an annoying 1 hour setup First problem is that there’s no directions. You have to figure out that the blades are in a compartment that you need to open yourself. Then there’s a lever on the side that you’re suppose to know about that releases a blade after it’s been added. The other problem is that retracting the blade was not working when I first used it. After opening up the knife with an Allen wrench and spending a bunch of time learning how it worked, I realized the problem was that, after adding a blade, the blade gets stuck on the release lever when trying to retract it. I made some adjustments to the screw around the release lever and that seemed to fix the issue. But boy was that more trouble then it should be for what was suppose to be a high quality knife. I’m reading other reviews here and it seems like other people are facing the same issue.

Slide the blade all the way out and then push the release button. You don't have to take the knife apart, anyone posting something like that is clueless. Compared to the many other knifes I have used, is is the best and most comfortable to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Junk!! After wasting a half hour trying to insert blade as per Dewalt video it was evident this cutter is a piece of junk. No thanks. Very poor engineering/construction/quality control. My first and last purchase of anything Dewalt.

First one needs an engineering degree to find, load and try to put the thing back together. I discovered the blades are stored in the lower part of the handle which opens by pressing on the yellow button up top. Once that is figured out, an allen wrench is needed to unscrew the allen screw and separate the two body sections. When you separate the body the lower part of the handle comes apart and have a good time 1) placing the blades properly so that the blade retracts properly, 2) positioning the lower handle so that the two body parts hold it in and 3) keeping the blade area steady while you're holding the lower body part steady and then trying to insert the allen screw, align the two body parts and screw the knife back together. After about 20 minutes I said to myself "This is absolutely ridiculous to have to go through all this trouble to use a box cutter." Returned the knife to Home Depot and went with a simply Husky. Much happier.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Knife has issues I purchased this to replace another brand that went bad. I chose this one because it looked very good and the blade change feature seemed cool. Trouble was the lack of directions as to how the blade is installed After trying for a half hour I went to the website and discovered other frustrated owners. I thied the lubrication suggestion and got the knife to retract. Without the lube it would no retract at all. DeWalt needs to include some more detailed instructions and figure out what is causing the retractor to stick once the blade is installed
