Questions & Answers

How do I get the blades loaded?

DWHT10046 retractable knife
Asked by: fred
Push the blade extraction button to the fully open lock position. Then push the blade into the knife while pushing the black blade release button. The blade should slip into place.

Asked by: CelticGolfer
Really, should we need a video on how to put a blade in a knife? There is one on YouTube, even after watching it no go with listing the blade - total piece of junk futon DeWalt and Home Depot.

I have used other brand name quick change knives previously, and have not had a problem. However this knife presented a challenge. The blade would not seat. I finally took it back to Home Depot and challenged the manager of the tool dept. to seat the blade. After ten minutes of trial and error, and changing to stronger glasses, he got it to permanently seat! RIDICULOUS!!!! AN INSTANT CHANGE KNIFE THAT COSTS MORE AND TAKES LONGER TO CHANGE THE BLADE; THAN A NORMAL KNIFE!! THE ONLY WINNER HERE IS DEWALT IF THEY SUCKER YOU INTO BUYING THIS KNIFE!!!! At the very least they could print instructions and images on the packaging.

I do not live near the Home Depot I purchased it from or I would return it. First, I find the direction for blade loading to be small and hard to see what exactly they are trying to tell you to do. I had to go on-line to see what they meant. For something as simple as a razor knife this is unacceptable. Now that I know how it is done I cannot get the blade to load properly and then retract completely back into the body of the knife. Because I live over 50 miles from the nearest Home Depot I will just think of the $10 I spent as another learning lesson.

I spent extra on this because I love my DeWalt brand tools and have found them to have superb quality. This knife though is just BAD! The so-called directions for loading\replacing the blades are just about unreadable, and what you can read and see of them does not help. Unless I figure out how to work this thing it's going back. DeWalt please don't let this be a sign of the quality of your future products!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor design These are some of the most poorly designed tools I have ever used. You can hardly dissemble much less reassemble with all the buttons and specific positioning of parts. And a hex screw to hold it all together instead of a phillips? Maybe they thought they were designing one of those toys only a genius can put together, or to show off their mad 3D design skills they learned on utube.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding! This knife is very well made and I'm really shocked at all the negative comments. Most seem to be from people complaining about retraction or holding the blade. There's a black button on the side and you have to 'feel' it when it locks into the new blade. My guess is people aren't doing that properly. Either that or all the unusual comments in favor of Milwaukee. Seems odd.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not The Best Knife The Pros? This knife feels great in your hand. the shape that in its in allows for comfort while cutting. The Con? Replacing the blade is a terrible process for this blade. On the unit I purchased. The button to released the blade is difficult to push and the blade struggles to come out. Would not recommend to a friend.
