Q:Are the metal slats required? If using as a surrounding frame for a mechanical bed that raises head and foot will not need slats.

Fairly easy to assemble. Only had a problem with the 2 holes not lining up on the two vertical posts at the foot of the bed, so as you can imagine the screw could not threaded. However, the additional hole on the post did line up. Hopefully this issue will be addressed, but the bed is assembled and has been in use for 2 weeks. Love the look!
