Bit broke after 2 holes
I've had problems with these bits twisting before because they can't handle much torque but this is a first. The bit completely sheared after I had only drilled two holes through 2x4's, no doubt due to a manufacturing defect. These are definitely not quality bits, buyer beware.

Sorry Diablo. You missed the mark on this one.
I've enjoyed other Diablo products and I've used the identical Bosch spade bits with much success. So I expected these newly branded Diablo bits to perform just like the Bosch bits. Well I've never had a Bosch spade break on me. Not gonna lie. I'm disappointed in the performance of these Diablo spades.

I've got a number of spade drill bits. Most of them have gotten a bit dull so I was eager to get this bit to test. It has a threaded tip, which is new to me. I gave it a good test on an old piece of wood. Without premarking with a awl point, I drilled. The bit bore into the wood beautifully. It made a decently clean hole. Drilled a second hole, which was even cleaner. I would like to have an entire set of these guys!

This drill it has what looks like a sheet metal screw attached to the tip of the bit. This feature helps dig into the wood and keeps it on track. It is a very aggressive bit, so make sure you are holding your drill stable when you start drilling. I compared this bit to a plain 3/4 inch spade bit. The Diablo bit drilled the hole in about half the time and with less effort. Both holes had the same quality. So if time is important to you, this is a great bit.

First off let me start by saying when it comes to sharpness and longevity, Diablo does a great job. I have never owned a spade bit with a speed tip. Not sure how that would change the dynamics of the bit. I love how sharp this bit is. The only reason I rated this at 3 stars is because of the tip. I feel you lose a lot of control over the cut with this tip because it is pulling you through the wood and not allowing you to adjust your own pressure when and where needed. As for most of my spade bits I use them on a drill press to ensure that I achieve a perfect hole. With the speed tip you can not use these bits with hammer drills or drill presses. So this the speed tip will not find a home in my tool box. Think you can use it with a drill press? Then check out the video I have attached.

The Diablo 3/4” Spade Bit works extremely well. The screw tip design really makes it easy to drill into wood exactly where you want the holes to go. I have only drilled a few holes into soft pine so far for running conduit, so I don’t know how long the sharpness will last. Overall, the Diablo brand is what I choose to purchase because of the durability of the products. Thank you.

This type of drill bit has a serious bite to it. Unlike a typical paddle bit, the screw tip on this bit literally screws into the wood and pulls the bit in. There is no need for you to push down on it and actually don't let it go too deep all at once. You need to reverse it out after about an inch of depth and then repeat that again after another inch. This won't be a problem if your material is not that thick and a very hard material like mine was. It bound up on me and I twisted my wrist pretty good. Follow the recommendation on the package and use a drill with a side handle if drilling thick / hard materials. Also tried it in 3/4" MDF and the screw tip does not pull because the material is so weak. The bit behaves more like a regular paddle bit- just push and drill.and then is works fine. If you need to drill a hole to a specific depth (not all the way through) then don't use this bit.

This drill bit is definitely a 'speed demon' as advertised. I was looking for something that would cut through 2x4s quickly since I plan to put up a trellis using the lumber as posts and bamboo canes as cross pieces. To date, I have tested it out in my hand drill and it definitely sped VERY quickly through the thickness of the boards I tested, 1x3 clamped over 2x4. In fact, it felt as if I was being pulled rather than pushing. I expect that I will switch to the drill press in the future to have a bit more control. (I'm a bit older than some woodworkers and have somewhat weak wrists.) The hole was clean enough for this type of outdoor structure, but not as clean as I would have liked for other uses, such as finger holes for drawers, cutouts for slots, or finished pieces. You would definitely benefit from drilling from both sides to reduce blow-out. All in all, if you are looking for a FAST, sharp tool to give you a quick result, this bit will fit the bill, as they say.
