Questions & Answers

Does this hose work with a gravity fed rain barrel system (very low pressure)?

Does this hose work with a gravity fed rain barrel system (very low pressure)?
Asked by: rm
My experience is it will not work. Gravity fed systems are generally measured in single digit psi. I have a gravity fed system with the barrel about 2.5 feet higher than the garden, so roughly 1 psi. I used short 5 foot sections of the soaker hose directly connected to the main line. I left it on for over 6 hours and there was no appreciable water flow (less than 1 gal for six 5' runs). The label mentions something like 25psi is optimal (almost 60' of height for a gravity fed system).

Asked by: bianca
Yes. Get drip adapter and put in place of sprinkler. Connect soaker and plug end of soaker with 1/4 plug. Or make a loop with soaker by slipping ends into two 1/4 connections. You can also limit the amount of water if excessive with the time you water with a gallons per hour drip emitter. Place this first with small section of 1/4 tube.

Asked by: Jane
Yes it should be available at Home Depot. You can get one that is battery operated so you won't need to have electricity going to it.

Asked by: Bulbman
This can work. I make a loop by using a 1/4 barber tee and place the tubing in a zig zag or other pattern and stake down with wire U shaped landscap fabric anchors.

1/4 in. x 50 ft. Porous Drip Soaker Hose is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 134.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good concept, does not last. If you purchase this, definitely keep it under mulch and out of the sun. I've had moderate success with it this way. I still had problems with consistent flow over the whole length of tubing. Lots of water came out right where it connected to my 1/2" main line, a hefty amount came out in the first few feet, but then it left a lot to be desired for the rest of the length. If you leave this exposed to the sun and air, it will not last. Mine is dried out and cracking (as in snapping into pieces) after 2 years. For instance, I cut a broken part off and tried to reattach it only to have the intact piece crack and crumble too. Save your money and buy the laser-cut 1/4" tubing instead. Look for the ones with backflow preventers built into every perforation. Those have been significantly more effective as well as long lasting for me.

I find this is ideal for row crops, such as carrots, onions, beans, peas. Remember to purchase goof plugs to cap the ends if you intend to use short sections on rows. You can also use this nicely to water trees; Use a barbed tee to make a circle of soaker hose fed by a 1/4" tubing and place it at the tree's drip line. I bury this under ground to protect it from the sun and to minimize evaporation.

Gave this a 5 because I really like it but it does not work at my house because we have hard water and it took about 10 times of use for the hose to be clogged up by the water. Sooo I would recommend this for homes without hard water or a great water filter. LOL It's a great way to evenly water plants and much easier to install than those tiny nozzles but I will have to go back to the nozzles so my plants will get water and not die.

The tubing is very easy to work with but the amount of water it puts out is inadequate for almost any plant. If you have a plant that needs very little water, then this is for you. It obviously saves water.

It started out to water well but in just a few weeks the drip system dripped only in few intermittent places, although the water pressure was fine. I did like how easy it was to connect to a drip line.
