I have two of these in plastic boxes a few inches below grade. They seem to work fine but was wondering what kind of problems might occur by having these installed below grade?
Asked by: David
DIG RBC 7000 battery operated controller with ¾ inch anti-siphon valves backflow preventer (under certain conditions) will discharge water externally. If the system pipes and heads are at a higher elevation than the valve, then a higher volume of water may be discharged every time the valve closes. If it is inside the valve box and soil does not provide adequate drainage, standing water can accumulate, and the interior box environment can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other pests. Also, if the water fills up the box and the anti-siphon valves air-vent (backflow preventer) becomes submerged, it will cease to function, and this could result in continuous discharge while the valve is open, increasing the chances of water waste and potential flooding. How high from ground should it be. I have it at 6"" and when it shuts off i get water coiming out of anti siphon side.

Asked by: Fonzie
In general, it is important to know why anti-siphon valve of any size or brand should always be installed at least 6 inches above the highest head on the system: DIG RBC 7000 battery operated controller with ¾ inch anti-siphon valves backflow preventer (under certain conditions) will discharge water externally. If the system pipes and heads are at a higher elevation than the valve, then a higher volume of water may be discharged every time the valve closes. I bought the DIG RBC8000 about 1 year ago (July 2016) not having high expectations. I needed something fast so picked this one out without much research. I live in North Hollywood, CA and with the high temperatures consistent watering is key to my garden. One missed watering and my plants go through stress or die. This timer works beautifully. It is simple to install, simple to program and it keeps my plants watered, never missing a scheduled watering. My garden is happy and so am I. Oliver

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I'd buy it again I can't speak to longevity, since I'm reviewing this only a few days after I installed it. But I can review some features: ^The main body is tough enough to withstand screwing the fittings in very tight with wrenches. What I mean is that the body didn't crack or break when lots of pressure was applied to the threads. ^The instruction manual is quite clear about how to operate this unit. You know how some manuals are hard to read because it's translated badly from Chinese? Well this seems to have been written by someone who knows English very well and has actually operated the unit. ^Installation of batteries (not included) is very simple. ^Programming the unit is easy. ^It has a nice cover over the screen and buttons to keep dirt out. ^So far it works exactly as it should. ^The control unit has a spiral cord similar to an old phone cord. This allows a user to remove it from the body to a more comfortable position for programming. This is a very nice feature.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent, but bound to break This is really the only product I can use if I want an automatic sprinkler. It is not very durable and if it is near a driveway or on your lawn it is inevitable that it will break. How do I know? I am on about my 4th one. (At near $50 a pop, plenty of screaming and cussing ensued.) They improved the "neck" portion of it so it is not as fragile as before, a small accidental hit with the mower doomed 2 of these for me. This time they offered me a extended warranty on it, so I feel a little better. It was like 7 bucks for the warranty so you have to do it, trust me, it is worth it. As far as programming and running, that part works great for me, that is why I keep going back. Hard to recommend this, but I don't see a lot of other options when you don't have power.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to install I would not use this product anywhere I could easily run power, however, I work on a large property and power is not always available. This product has been a life saver in those spots. We currently have 8 installed and they have all been working fine for over a year.
