Can the tubing be released after it's inserted (like many push to connect fittings)?

The tubing can be pulled out but it won't be easy. If you pull hard on the tubing while rocking it side to side and back and forth, it might walk itself out. The outside of the tubing will likely be damage and should be cut off.

Shouldn't this be called a push to connect vs compression fitting (which usually have a ferrule a...

I would not call it "push to connect". It is more like "sprain your wrist as you try to jam the tubing in" to connect. Yet, once installed, it is a rugged and water tight connection. It is almost as hard to remove the tubing.

I can't push in the 1/4" tubing even with soap on the tube.

It takes a bit of luck and a lot of strength to force the 1/4" tubing through the hole. As you found, soap does not help. The best I could do was to cut the end of the tubing off square, fold it over so about 1" sticks out. Then put the fold in the palm of my hand while pushing the end into the hole. Rock back and forth and side to side while you push with all your might. If you are lucky, the tube will walk its way in. Once you get the tubing installed, it is very hard to pull out without tearing up the tubing. The hose thread to 1/4" tubing coupler with the barbed end is not as rugged but is much easier to use.

Worked perfectly. I created a gravity drip system with a bucket and 1/4 inch tube. This connected perfectly with a coupling fitted for a garden hose and was easy to join with 1/4 inch drip hose.

This compression fitting is critical for a 1/4" drip line system, it hooks to the pressure-reducer at your hose spout and delivers water to the system. I had to replace mine after four years as it leaks. Its cheap and works fairly well although I generally get leaks from the main large connect, likely because of the rubber washer in there. Those leaks usually self-repair with the minerals in my water. To connect your system to this fitting, you just need to shove the 1/4" tube in there and it compresses it for a fairly leak-free seal. Of note: it is very hard to pull tubing out of this fitting. If you have a leak, you can just push it in a little further though.

It is extremely difficult to insert the 1/4" hose into the hole for the hose connector. It is NOT your typical compression fitting, it is a forced taper. Also, just the act of connecting the hose connector to a hose bib will cause your tubing to "wind up" twisting the hose when putting in on or taking it off. I would only recommend it if you had a dire need for one and there was no other option available to you.
