Questions & Answers

Can I use this as a dust bath for chicks and chickens?

Asked by: Chickenlover
This is a collection of organic materials (mulch, coco husks, peat, etc.) and rocks. I think you would want organic topsoil rather than potting soil.

why can these not be avail at all stores

This product Pot of gold and noble worm castsings,..etc If this product is carried at a location why can it not be put on a truck and have free pickup in your local store? The shipping cost on products like this that HDX will only send to your house, even though Watsonville has a few hundred of these bags of soil, is too expensive to make it worth while. Those of us stuck in Texas and such would like to have access to these great high quality options without the cost prohibitive shipping cost. HDX has the infrastructure... use it. Please HDX let us trapped in the middle of the county have access to these products too.

I had to trash the tomato start (gnat-infested and fusarium wilt) and the strawberry start (gnat-infested and powdery mildew) after the gnats and diseases began to manifest. I still have to bleach the pots they died in before starting fresh, this time from seed with a different, new soil. I bought the plants and soil from the Home Depot on San Fernando Rd in Glendale, CA.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Way too alkaline and infested with fungus gnats I transplanted two healthy tomato seedlings into containers using this soil. Within days they both began showing signs of nutrient deficiencies. I tested the soil pH out of the bag and it measured 8.3 on the digital meter and well over 8 using a chemical reagent method. The target pH stated on the Dr. Earth website is 6.5. To confirm my method I tested bags of other potting soils and they all tested in their target range. Despite fighting to keep the pH down, I had sickly looking plants all the way through and diminished results at harvest. Add to that the bag came infested with fungus gnats and my plants didn't stand a chance. I will not use this soil again.

I use this for seed starting/blocking (mixed 1:3 with coir), greenhouse production, and in indoor Garden Towers. I've had no trouble getting seeds started, and the towers are thriving. I wonder if some folks are having problems due to the aloe content. This product was formulated for drought-prone areas (California) and adds a moisture coating to protect plant roots. If you over water or live in a cool damp place, this may be too much for your plants and lead to damping off/root rot. So far I have not seen any problems with my plantings or my clients'. Unlike other potting mixes that contain little to no nutrition - or worse, are doctored up with toxic MiracleGrow - Dr. Earth is nutrient rich and organic. It also saves the need to mix in your own mycorrhizae (beneficial fungi that make nutrients more available to your plants). I started using it specifically because of the myco mix; haven't been disappointed.

My plants started to grow then just turned yellow and stunted. I used Kellogs before and had much better results. I thought I was upgrading my medium since it cost twice as much but it was a downgrade.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dr. Earth's Pot o' ROCKS -- inorganic material inside This was something I wanted to believe in. I just purchased a Japanese maple and wanted a great organic soil for the container I was planting it in. So I splurged and purchased this, what a mistake. The soil has lots of organic material in it, but much of it is not broken down enough. It's full of sticks and shreds of bark that will take years to break down. Here's the kicker though, I guess it's called pot of gold because I ended up having to pan it to remove a lot of rocks (almost 2lbs of rocks in the entire bag). I was shocked to find these pebbles and stones, some of them quite large, in a bag of potting soil. Rocks are not organic, in fact, they're the very essence of inorganic. I had already dumped the bag in the container, otherwise I would have returned this. Do not buy this unless you like wasting money on inferior products.
