That is not advisable. The grout seals the edges of the tile, and provides a means for proper tile alignment. Minimum grout should be 1/16'.

You want to use non-modified thinset if you have applied a rubber coating (that red stuff you paint or roll on-HD sells it in tubs in the thinset/grout aisle-it has the word 'red' in the name) to your concrete backer board. A modified thinset on a backer board coated with a rubber moisture prevention (the red stuff) will not cure properly. Non-modified is what I prefer with all my tiling unless it's a kitchen backsplash or non-wet wall, etc. For large shower walls with concrete backer boards that have been coated with rubber barrier, mix small-ish batches of unmodified since it tends to dry a little quicker than modified, especially if you are doing all the work by yourself.
