Bought this with the hope of cooling our upstairs bedroom, since the main ac doesn't do a good job at reaching. Setting it up in the horizontal sliding window was harder than expected, and there were no clear instructions. The black plastic panel used to block most of the opening has size adjustments of a whole inch, which mean it was impossible to get a good seal. The plastic itself is clearly of very low quality. Worse, since it's black, in a west facing window that gets sun, and the unit blows out extremely hot air, the plastic actually melted and deformed to the point that the pipe from the unit would no longer stay attached. This happened in just a few weeks! And now I can't use it until I somehow melt that panel back into a flat shape, or get a replacement. On top of that, the unit is very loud, making sleep difficult. I was hoping to avoid the expense of getting a mini split unit, but now I still need to and wasted my money on this thing. Don't waste your money on this.

Poorly engineering and design of window slider A and window slider attachment.
I purchase this unit to replace my 8yr old Haier 4 in 1 which worked well in my sunroom year round until heat pump stopped working last week. The new Danby 4 in 1 unit came on Friday 12/3/20. I worked on installing the unit for 4 hours Friday afternoon, but was unable to install the window slider in a double hung window, where I had the Haier. The slider is a poorly engineered to narrow plastic part only about 3 inches wide, too narrow to properly fit in the window with the poorly designed slider adapter for the vent hose. The plastic clips on the adapter would not keep the adapter in place and would come off of the slider because of the narrow design of the slider and the shape of the adapter, the window sill would pop off the adapter because there was insufficient clearance between the adapter and window sill. I tried several fixes to no avail, so I quit for the night. I finally figured out how to do the install on Saturday morning, it took about 15 minutes to do the install. I realized what the answer was, I had no problem with the slider or adapter on the Haier unit. The Haier slider is about 5-6 inches wide and made of metal, not plastic. The adapter had a mounting ring that had four screws that attached it to the slider, the adapter is a heavy weight plastic that had two clips tp attached it to the ring on the slider, so now the unit is vented an works properly. The heat pump is heating the sunroom now, I will not be able to test how the air conditioner works until spring 2021. The slider should be at least 5-6 inches wide and made of a sturdier material and the adapter should be redesigned so it can be attached to the slider without popping off the slider.

    Hello Howard,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. The DAP140HE3BDB-6 portable air conditioner has a small internal reservoir that holds approximately 2 cups of water. When it is used in air conditioning mode the unit will self-evaporate a majority of the water which reduces the need to drain it. The amount of water and number of times you will have to drain it depends on how often it is in use and the relative humidity. If the reservoir does fill then you can place a pan under the drain port however you would need to ensure it can contain at least 2 cups of water.

    Regards
    Ann H Danby

I have been less than impressed with Danby's customer service. When initially installing the unit, several of the small black tabs on the window adaptor broke off. I contacted customer support several weeks ago requesting a new adaptor and have yet to hear back from them. I'm sure there are comparable products on the market from companies that actually care about and listen to their consumers.
