Questions & Answers

Are these a structural replacement for 16d nails?

Asked by: Rob
Better than 16d in my opinion. I use them in all my framing Jobs, interior or exterior, never had one break. The extra cost over nails is worth it. Never rusting or pulling loose. No squeeks or pops in the future. I use my nailer for speed on house framing then follow with a 3" deckmate (top and bottom plate) of each stud, and of course bottom plate to framing and trusses to top plate. I live where there are tornadoes and I always walk away from the job knowing my projects stand the best chance against them.

What is the shear strength of these screws? How much weight one screw hold?

Asked by: BillBlaney
Not sure the shear strength of these, I know it's not as good as a framing nail but they have way better clamping strength. I use them to frame all the time. They are a more expensive option versus nails but the clamping strength is exceptional, especially if you need a wall to be stiff. In saying all that even though the shear strength isn't as good as a nail they will stiffen the wall so well you won't need the shear strength because the wall won't move.

Can these be used on #2 GC Pressure-Treated Southern Yellow Pine Timber?

Asked by: J446538
Yes but I wouldn't trust them. New thread design reduces grip considerably. Would not recommend Deckmate right now.

Can this type of screws used for composite deck?
Asked by: Bin
Yes, don't see why not, and the design works well to use without predrilling.

I remodeled an old farmhouse with oak framing. Framing nails would bend everytime. Deckmate screws with a strong corded driver, no problem! I've never had one snap or strip. Drive them in, drive them out over and over, no problem! My framing nailer has collected dust for years. I use 3" deckmates to frame decks and ramps now.

I liked using these screws, they self-started easily, and once started aggressively sank into the pressure treated wood that I was using to resurface my deck. It is also nice to know that I can easily go back and tighten with ease any area that might become loose as the boards settle and age.

I have been contracting for 15 years and building my entire life, these are the worst screws that I have ever had the displeasure of using. 25% of them just bore a hole and another 25% strip out. They are complete garbage.

You'd have to have your driver running in reverse to put these in. Exactly where are the threads in this? They barely extend past the body of the screw. Can you say, "stripped out?"

These screws were original #8 and were certainly easier to use and held better, the revised tip does help start the screw better but it also bores through and sometimes causes the threads not to bite well.
