Asked by: fencerefurber
No, brushed copper finish on plastic. That is why they turn black over time in the sun.

Clear coat material? If I want the copper to develop a patina, can the clear coat be 'washed' off (dissolved)?

Asked by: BobSeattle
No. These caps have copper finished plastic for tops, so they will never get a patina like real copper.

Is there anything I can seal the copper top with to make the finish last longer and not discolor?

Is there anything I can seal the copper top with to make the finish last longer and not discolor?
Asked by: Sandy
Sandy - Our copper finish post caps come with a thin, clear marine lacquer designed to protect them before and during installation. Once exposed to the elements, the sun's ultraviolet rays, moisture and pollution begin to break down this coating, exposing the metal underneath. In its natural state, copper breaks down in the elements and patinas. In general, copper progresses from a natural salmon color to a series of russet browns and grays, and finally to a blue-green or gray-green patina.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great deal on these post caps I have used these caps for the past 11 years on my decks. They look great, however as with all things copper they do weather after a few years. The original caps were all wood (except for the copper top) and rotted after a few years. The design has improved with a plastic base under the copper, while still retaining the cedar trim. I needed to replace some after four years and was astonished by the pricing variations. After a little research I found these at the Depot and was thrilled how inexpensive they were for the real thing. I give the price a 5 and durability a 3, but for my taste they far surpass anything else out there for the look I want. And for 6 dollars and change it is worth it to replace them every so often. As a side note, I should point out that they can be shined up with muriatic acid bath and steel wool, although you will need to clear coat them, and even then they will weather a lot faster than the new ones.

Although I should've guessed, based on the price. The wood trim appears to be made of a nice quality cedar and looks to be glued at the corners (not stapled), but the "copper" cap is definitely made of Plastic. Some reviews have said that it's copper coated plastic, but as far as I know, it's not possible to put a copper coating on plastic. It looks like it's either a cooper colored plastic or it's a copper colored paint with a thin clear coat. Nowhere in the description does it say anything about this. Very Disappointed! That needs to be corrected. It's completely false advertising. Not sure why it would turn black in the sun, as one review mentioned, but it's probably because it's cheaply made. If it were real copper, however, yes, it would indeed turn very dark brown before turning green. It takes real copper anywhere from 7 to 10 years to oxidize and develop that nice green patina. But these are not gonna do that. I picked them because I like the style and the way they look. I would probably keep them if I thought they would stay like this, but I'm worried they won't, so I'm probably going to take them back and find some that are made of 100% real sheet copper.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Skip this purchase, copper was a waste.. Let me start by telling you I don't normally write reviews but these are so poor I don't want anyone else to be so disappointed. In less than one year the copper was effectively stained black in areas and not even the pretty green that copper usually turns. This year the bottom halves of them just fell apart from the top. They are barely held together with staples. I'm taking them back because you don't expect post tops to fall into pieces in less than two years. Skip this purchase. Will see if Home Depot stands behind their products. I've never had problems with a Home Depot product and just finished a complete house gutting with lots from Home Depot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful, but pricey These caps are very attractive and well made. I haven't installed them yet but they appear to go on very easily and fit well. Also , I can't report on what they will look like after many years. My one concern is that they are clear coated (lacquer? pulyurethane?) which will affect the way they age and grow the patina that copper develops. The coating will keep them bright - until it eventually breaks down and flakes off. I expect them to then begin to darken in spots, unevenly, until it eventually all wears off. That could take decades. In the mean time they're gorgeous. They aren't cheap, but I think they are worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful final touch to new wood fence These post caps are beautiful! They look more expensive than they are because the base is wood, not plastic. We put on a clear oil sealer to match our wood fence. They fit easily over the "4x4" posts and are snug enough we didn't even need a set-screw or nail. We purchased 30 in all. If there is any negative, it's that there is no consistency in the color of the wood base, so when we applied the sealer, some came out dark, some medium, and some light. But from a distance, those variations are not even noticeable. We've received lots of compliments from neighbors and friends.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not fit. This product had the incorrect description and did not fit my fence posts. It says it fits 4"by4" post, which is the dimensions of my post. It would fit a post 3.5"by3.5. They were a good price and looked nice, but won't work for me. I'm super bummed. I will be returning them.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Un impressive.... :( The styling looks wonderful but the quality is poor. So far 2 of the 6 that purchased have broken. The copper is attached to a piece of plastic and then stapled to the wood trim below... The staples pull thru the plastic easily which leaves the trim attached to your railing without a top. It is too late for my project but I would recommend purchasing a different product.
