Are all videos stored local? Cloud backup options? Is a subscription to the service required to view remotely (via Internet)? Can live view be fed to a PC or smartphone via Internet only?

Yes to local storage. No to cloud backup, but if you're savvy you could probably set that up without much difficulty. No subscription necessary, though to use the networked functions you do need to have a good quality internet connection. You can do live view by PC or smartphone or by a hardwired connection to a monitor.

The cameras require common 120 AC power which you get from any common house receptacle. Each camera comes with it's own 12 foot line ( extensions are optional so plan accurately what you need before you complete your online order ) with a transformer attached. Nothing scary... just plug a camera power line into an outlet and before you get off the ladder it's on the monitor.

Had a similar wireless system with another company but they no longer offered this model and I didn't want to change to the battery wireless as its undependable. After lots of research of other companies I decided to pick Defender as the ratings were rather high and proved to be a good choice as its an awesome product. In addition, It was an easy install but would recommend that you don't rush the install put lots of thought to outlet locations as the wires are about 8 foot in length. After install take a couple of days before you fine tune stuff otherwise it will drive you nuts. What I also like about the structure of the cameras is its all plastic the old one I had was connected to a metal base and it rusted this is well constructed and obviously wont rust. That said, I would highly recommend this product I am a very meticulous person and spend lots of time on research before I purchase anything, buy it. Techie B

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Features & hardware excellent except for the DVR Information leads one to believe a monitor is not needed, however it is absolutely needed to operate the system effectively. I bought a 19in TV at walmart for $88 that works well. The quick set up info supplied in the box falls far short of whats needed to get every thing working. The support is put of Canada and that alone makes the difficulty of support tolerable. However the seems to be a lack of good information flow or training, as it took 5 days and three different support people before I got the problems with the DVR setup solved. Finally Daniel who was the last contact had all the knowledge necessary to solve the balance of the setup issues. The first 4 days where wasted trying to work with a DVR that needed its firmware updated, which involved them sending a email link for me to download onto a thumb drive to be plugged into the DVR to update it. No direct update! AT this point I'm not sure all problems with the DVR are resolved, but the set up is complete.

It was time for soemthihg better so I thought these would be a good choice. I am no pleased with the "wireless" as they still need a power source. I did know this drawback going in so that's on me. Still would have prefered some alternative to a plug in system. Its ok for inside but not for outdoor use so much. My biggest complaint and something I didnt know when I bought this system was that there is no option to block areas for motion sensing. In other models (including my old one) I was able to program the system to avoid detection motion in certain areas of the camera. This comes in handy when you live on a busy street or want to avoid that tree blowing in the upper right hand corner of the screen. For this reason the cameras area almost worthless because there is absoluetly no way I can watch my front door and not detect the motion of the cars on the street. This is beyond disappointing. I would return it, however I didnt set it up until after I had it for 30 days. I would look for another model if I could do it again.

The initial set up was not as "intuitive" as my Pheonix 2 system, but this system does far more. The customer support was a huge help and had me up and running very quickly. I am still playing with some of the settings, but had it running well enough to use in no time at all. I am very happy with the system so far and am sure I will be for a long time.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Overall good but two of my cameras stopped working the set up and functionality of the product is good. picture quality is decent and the night vision works pretty well. however 2 out of my 4 cameras broke within a half year. they no longer recorded, output, or connected to the system. the app works fine, but it looks out dated. lastly, the auto firmware updating function in but into the system setting does not actually work.
