I am very knowledgeable and capable of programming timers so I was very disappointed with this timer. Regardless of the programming it would not turn on and off at the times set. I reset several times and reprogrammed again and nothing worked. Yes, it was set to “Auto”. When set to “On” it works, when set to “OFF” it is off. I didn’t use “Ran” (random) mode. Another issue I don’t like able this digital timer is that when you unplug it, all the programming is erased. My other digital timers all have battery backup so you don’t lose the programming. So back to mechanical timer where it is more reliable

It is very possible that the timer was not turning on after you set your programming because of when you actually programmed it during the day. For example, if your program was set for 8AM - 5PM, and you setup the timer at 1pm that day, then the timer will begin its schedule the next day at 8AM. This unit does have a backup battery that is designed to keep your settings, so you might try removing it and reinserting it.

Nice to have the equivalent to a digital 7-day, multiple program timer and two outlet strips all in one. Four of the outlets (on the left) are switched on and off by the timer, and the other four are always on, so this is like having a 5-outlet strip plugged into the wall plus a digital timer plugged into that and a 4-outlet strip plugged into the timer -- all in one package. Just to be clear, although the product description mentions the timer has multiple programs, the 4 switched outlets are NOT switched individually. You can use the multiple programs to have the outlets come on+off at different times during the week, but all 4 are all off or all on. I used this for an entertainment center, where I've got a TV, DVR, tuning adapter, and a couple other things that need to be plugged in. The Cisco tuning adapters that I'm forced to use since my cable company went to switched digital are terrible: they will randomly just stop working and have to be rebooted every couple of weeks. The only good work-around is to preemptively reboot them about once a week. So I plug the tuning adapter into this and program the timer to power the TA off for 10 minutes once a week at a time in the middle of the night when my DVR won't be trying to record anything. So far, its working GREAT. (But I've only had it a couple of weeks) A couple of things could be better, so only 4 stars. First, when you set up a program in the timer, it is not smart enough to figure out if the plugs should be on or off NOW. For example, if you're setting this up at say 8 PM, you set the clock to 8 PM, and you set the timer program to turn on at 6 PM and off at 11 PM. The plugs should be on now because it's between 6 and 11, but they're not and the timer won't turn them on until 6 PM tomorrow! And there's no button to manually turn on the switched outlets. You have to wait one entire cycle, or set another program to turn them on a minute or so in the future, or kludge the clock settings. Second, I wish it had an LED or something to show you whether the switched plugs were on or off.

First, although there are 8 outlets, the timer controlled outlets are all grouped together on one side and therefor is not usable to switch 4 power-supplies; if all 8 outlets were switched I could spread out the power-supplies and use it. In all fairness it does state that only four are timed switched, but it does not state that they are all on one side. No. 2, I need this as a countdown timer to run for 16 hours. It is not. I can program it to turn off after 16 hours by calculating what time it will be be 16 hours from present time, but that's a real hassle. It might be a fine timer but it does not meet my needs.

You are correct, by design, the 4 outlets controlled by the timer are grouped to the left and the 4 outlets that are always on are grouped to the right. Below the last outlets, an indicator will show which outlet rows are controlled by the timer and by the switch. We do not advertise this timer having a countdown function. If you are looking for a timer with a countdown option, we recommend searching for the item 26898-P2. This timer will have a full 24-hour countdown option.

    I bought this to turn my terrarium lights on and off. It was much cheaper than the reptile or aquarium branded timers, and appears exactly the same as one of those brands. It works exactly like it is supposed to. I've read a lot of negative reviews on here, and I think people just weren't using it correctly. Perhaps the directions make it more confusing? I had lost my directions prior to programming it, so I had to kind of just figure it out. I didn't find it that difficult. I think my favorite part of this thing is that is has a button battery back up, so if you need to move it to a different wall plug in, you don't lose your programmed settings. I've been using it for months and had no problems with it. I am actually about to go buy another one for a tank that is in a different room. If you need a timer for your aquarium or terrarium, buy this one!
