I wish there was a way to thank, "Girlofalltrades" for her review, and the time she took to post her advice and explicitly detailed instructions on how to adapt these knobs. I installed two of these knobs for a client and thought I had somehow jacked up a simple task until I read her review, followed by the one after it. Thank you Girlofalltrades for relieving my stress of not having to tell a client that I couldn't install a door knob. I built shims inside hoping to correct it until I found a more feasible solution, and now I'm going to pay it forward and make it even easier! In small, fine print at the bottom of the product overview page for this product is a short message stating that these won't work in a standard bored door without a bore adapter, (not included). It doesn't even say that it's sold separately, just not included, so I took a shot in the dark and searched. There is a bore adapter sold specifically for this product that costs $6.98 and will alleviate the frustration for the rest of us going forward knowing this. They aren't usually kept in stock so check and order it so you have it at installation time. These are beautiful, well-made and reasonably priced knobs, aside from the installation conundrum which is why I detracted a star from my rating.

easy, but cheap
and not in a good way. my 13 year daughter pulled the "glass" right out of the handle. at most 5 uses before it fell apart. so very very cheap. only reason it's not 1 star is that it was easy to install and not terribly expensive. don't buy if you have children in the house.

I replaced all of my closet door knobs with these sets. Returned first one because it had rust-like spots on it. Another set did not contain the spindle. These r reasons for only three stars, otherwise would have been five. The door knobs look beautiful and timeless. I would buy again because there are so few out there on the market. I bought a different set from a different hardware store but the threading was so bad it made the handle very hard to turn.

Defective latches, beware
These products have defective latches. I had to buy a new knob, which is a shame since it doesn't match older ones in my house the way this one did.

It's incredibly easy to adapt these to a large bore hole.
Most of us have a large pre drilled hole in our doors that will not allow the conventional attachment of these knobs because of the way they are designed. While you're purchasing the knobs, add a couple of additional items to your cart, including a package of #10-24x1" round head machine screws, you will need four screws per knob assembly. Also get two #10-24x3/4" coupling nuts. Install the latch first, then thread on one knob to the spindle. Your set screw needs to contact the flat part of the spindle and not the threads. Insert a screw onto each side of one backing plate and start the coupling nut. Slide the whole thing onto your door, it will have to be at a tilt to get past the latch. Have patience and thread one screw at a time onto the next plate into the coupling nut that's inside the door. It took a few tries for me to get it, but once you get them both on, tighten it up, but don't snug them down. Insert the threaded rod and screw on the other knob. Leave a bit of wiggle room. I left about a 1/16 gap. In the end for me, one knob set screw was on the bottom and one on the top. Tighten your knob set screws and then start to snug down the plates, keeping everything centered so nothing binds up. When you get it all centered and smoothly operating snug the plates down good. It's a pain, but so worth it to replace old plain knobs with these beauties. Good luck!

This is not a 'standard' door latch as both knob plates for each side of the door has hole rather than a tension screw that pulls the plates together. It's meant for a door that has been drilled only to expose the latch's knob shaft's square turning hole, and supposedly you are supposed to put wood screws into the knob plates to hold them in place. Since I have standard holes drilled in my door, I had to buy extra hardware (stove bolts and nuts) and bolt through to the opposite plate to hold the knobs in place. I made them work, but this is not a good kit for just replacing standard door knobs.

Love this item but it doesn't lock.
The old original doorknobs had a small pushbutton on the door plate that you could push to lock the door.
I haven't found anything to replace the exact original yet.

This is a gorgeous glass door knob. They look really beautiful on my new interior doors. For the price this is really a great product. They do not lock and they are a replacement for an older door that has a smaller bore. So YES, if you are putting on a new door, you will need the Defiant cross bore adapter, search on Home Depot... you will have to order. Get them you won’t be disappointed... unless you don’t get the cross bore adapter... then you will be bummed.
