The issue is that normal shower head extensions just screw in to the female fitting in the wall. Finding leaks is easy since you will be able to visually look at the connection after installation and before you slide on the matching chrome flange. And of course, there is nothing to measure at all.
This wall supply elbow comes with two challenges:
a. Once installed, you have no visual access to see if a water tight seal on the threads have been established or not. Essentially, everything is hidden. Yes, you can screw the stainless steel portion on (without the black trim piece) and peek behind to see the threads...but in order to place the black plastic trim, you need to unscrew (and unseal) the unit. Once you put it back on again, you can't see if it is leaking. I eventually had to make a wooden shim piece and cut a notch in the back so that IF the threads did not seal correctly, I'd at least see water leaking out from behind the elbow!
b. It will be a stroke of luck that your female wall connection and the threaded connector you need to buy to connect this unit are at the exact depth for the threads to fully engage and the hose connector is rotated to a 90º angle facing down. I had to cut & drill multiple pieces of wood the same size (but different thicknesses) as the black trim piece to serve as shims. Too thick of a piece of wood and you can't achieve the correct number of rotations on the elbow to fully engage the threads (Teflon taped of course) and get a water tight seal. Too thin of a piece of wood and you can get full engagement of the threads, but there is still a gap between the elbow and the wall. That took a lot of time.
It would have been nice if Delta had provided a thicker yet somewhat elastic black trim piece to account for the variation in wall depths and nipple lengths. You don't have to be off by much to make this unit not fit.
Once installed, it does look very nice however and functions as it should. Good luck!
