can you verify that the Slim 70 CFM wall/ceiling exhaust fan can be installed through wall?

My contractor has asked me to confirm that the Delta Slim 70 CFM wall/ceiling exhaust fan can be installed through wall. This is for a small attic bathroom. The description says wall/ceiling but the picture indicates a ceiling installation. Please confirm through wall installation is possible and whether there are any issues with through wall installation.
Asked by: 225heehaw
Yes, I emailed the manufacturer through their web site before I purchased this fan and they responded within 24 hours that it is indeed good for wall application. It should be installed with the discharge opening facing up so that the damper functions properly.

Is there exterior protection from rain, snow and wind?

I will be doing a wall mount. Is there a cap or something for the exterior that helps keep precipitation out (and possibly reduces cold air intrusion from winter blowing)?
Asked by: CT
I think the other answers missed the question. You want a cap on the exterior vent pipe - most horizontal pipes have a cap with a flap. Check with HD or a sheet metal place. Note that this unit vents thru the 3 inch port on its side. The fan does not vent directly out the back, like an attic fan

When I flipped the switch - nothing! I was about to recheck all the electrical connections when I realized, it was on and running, but almost silent. So silent in fact, that my daughter wants me to take it out, and replace it with something noisy, to cover up bathroom noises. Grrrr!. Anyway, I am going to take it out and put it in my house to replace a very noisy old fan.

I was looking for a very quiet and budget priced fan in store and found only more expensive and more noisy fans. This fan uses a squirrel cage blower configuration perfectly designed for low noise operation. The fan is driven by a brushless DC electronic motor and consumes much less power ( about 9W) than AC motor based fans. In fact, if you don't know Delta - it is the company making PC and processor fans and you most likely already have their products. The operation is very quiet and the green LED inside is handy to indicate that fan is operating. The enclosure is neatly built and can be used as a direct replacement of older standard fans. I needed a different direction of the exhaust - and I took out the fan out of enclosure, drilled mounting holes and attached the fan to the board. Then I put the fan in and my remodeling job was quickly done. I will buy few more to replace all fans in my house. I would recommend this fan to everyone, and it is really a pity that HomeDepot does not reveal them in stores.

Our original exhaust fans were so noisy (4 sones) they drowned out any running water. Slim 50's are the opposite, they're so quiet (1 sone) you don't hear the fans with running water. We ordered these online and got fast delivery. BTW: check any product specs for adequate CFM and especially for replacements look for matching exhaust port diameter (often 3 or 4-inch).

Pros: -Piece of cake to install from inside the bathroom, if you can replace a light fixture you can install this little guy. -Updated grill design is nice and modern (could be a touch thinner) -Worlds better than the horrible train wreck sound of our old fan -I like the slow ramp up it does when it turns on -Immediately gets all the moisture out of our bathroom when the doors are open (before it would take about a half hour without a fan) -Delta has given us awesome customer service in the past on other products, very happy their product was the best fit for our wall fan replacement in our 117 year old house Cons: -Only reason I docked a star: the 80CFM is .6 sones, the 50CFM is 1 sone, why is this 70CFM TWO SONES? =( I'm not saying 2 sones is terrible, it's definitely not, I just can't understand why this fan is 2-3 times louder than the fans above and below it. I'm sensitive to sounds and I would call this fan noticeable but not at all annoying, the sound won't stop me from using it, and I'm happy it's available to replace the dinosaur of a fan we had before. -This does a good job of working in our 8.5' x 7' x 9' ceiling bathroom. I did order the 80CFM originally but our old house wasn't easily accommodating to make the existing hole big enough, so we bumped down to this one. During my very scientific shower test it did take much longer for the mirrors to get foggy, they fogged completely by end of the shower, and we still had a couple condensation drips on our walls, which we were really hoping the fan would prevent. Once out of the shower, the fan was very slow at defogging the mirrors—watching the grass grow, slow. However, once I opened the doors on our jack and jill bathroom, the mirrors almost instantly cleared when before it would've taken quite a while without a fan. Typically we shower with the doors open anyway so B+ on really putting it to the test, A+ on the daily use scenario. Overall, this fan is hands down the go-to pick if you need to replace an old in-wall fan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from We'll satisfied This was a replacement for an old unit in a guest shower. I wish I knew replacement would be so easy. I had to make the existing hole a little bigger but installation was pretty clear from the instructions and I had things cleaned up within 30 minutes. The new unit is not silent but runs satisfactorily quiet. The cover fits snug to the ceiling.

I had installed a Delta SLM70 in our master bath and it was a bit too small for the space so I decided to move that one to our 1/2 bath and upgrade to the SLM100. I was excited for an even quieter fan given the SLM100 is rated at 1.0 some vs. the 1.5 some for the SLM70. I crawled up into the attic, took out the old one, installed this one, crawled back down, flipped the switch and WOW this is terribly noisy! Much louder than the SLM70. I checked to make sure the motor and fan were tightly attached to the housing, ensured there was no rubbing anywhere causing vibrations - nothing worked. I don't know if this is defective, but I hate to fight with Home Depot or Delta for a replacement given this is such a pain to get to and swap out. I would NOT recommend this fan.
