What grit sanding belt is recommended for stripping paint off hardwood floors
Asked by: James
I certainly would not use 36 grit on a floor. Not only will it eat away the surface but it is like to dig into your floor. Use 120 or higher and go slow.

I put an hour on 1 belt, leveling & scratching mixed layers of paint on box truck graffiti prior to painting. Belt got paint globs on it like every belt I've ever used. It stood up to 4 or 5 cleanings with me using various chisels, a paint brush comb and a gum rubber belt cleaner trying to get the bigger globs off, which was successful enough that I saw improved sanding after each cleaning. Belt held up well. I had the sander tracking straight, no side jamming. So far I reckon theys good beltz.

I have them on my circular saws, miter saws, and both table saws. They are top for the price. So I went to Home depot to get the Diablo sanding belt. When I first put this on the sander, I was really excited. It cut my Brazilian hardwood like balsa. But 30 minutes later, the belt flew apart, separating at the tape. Life happens, so I changed out to another belt. this one lasted less than 20 minutes. After the third repeated the failure, all at the seam with a lot of life left in the abrasive, I gave up, went to Lowes and got a different brand at $7 dollars per belt. It lasted to finish up the rest of my job, sanding cabinets. As much as it pains me to admit it, I just can't recommend these belts, even for the casual user. I consider this as a fair product because while it remained in tact, it cut great.

Previous Norton brand, after 5 years, the adhesive at joint doesn't hold up. I would recommend not to expect belts to last several years in storage.

If you read the reviews giving this one star, there's a theme. The belts break shortly after using them. But a whopping majority give these belts five stars. Well, although i had purchased mine six years ago (to have a supply when I needed them). Surprise, everyone of them broke within seconds of sanding. So much for reviews.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I needed to sand through several layers of old paint... I needed to sand through several layers of old paint and varnish with 100 year old glue at the bottom just so I could repair a piece I was working on. this got to the bare wood quickly without much gunking up. It even lasted through a few hidden bent nails under all that mess.
