Questions & Answers

How do these attach to and work with a hook & loop sander?

Asked by: LambdaRAD
You use the black application pad provide with the disks and just stick the SandNet disks to that.

Does it leave swirls like the other sanding disks do?

Asked by: Becki
Becky, Swirl marks or "pigtails" if using a random orbit sander are the bane of any refinisher or finishing shop. If sanding bare wood, the swirl marks can be caused by broken off pieces of your abrasive pushing deep into the softer wood and leaving a mark that remains after bumping up to a higher grade of abrasive. One solution is to make sure you are using a fresh abrasive pad for the final finishing at each grade and do not use excessive force but a light touch before switching to the finer abrasive. Also try using a disc or pad with added lubricants -soap or wax to reduce loading on your abrasive. Most important, especially when refinishing surface coatings where you do not intend to burn all the way through the coating but intend to blend the coating before refinishing, use a powerful dust extractor and a disc with multiple holes so that you are extracting dust THROUGH THE ABRASIVE AND PAD. This airflow keeps your abrasive grains and your finish cooler and stops the old finish from pilling up onto the abrasive disc. Stop and look at your abrasive disc while woking to see if it is loading up due to melted finish clogging your abrasive grains (dried paint films will melt and fuse to your abrasive pads and belts very quickly). If so, you can switch to a coarse abrasive and use less pressure and switch your abrasive to one with added soaps and waxes to reduce loading. The hook and loop style abrasives offer even better cooling due to the tiny hooks allowing additional airflow around the abrasive grains. They also float the pad on the tiny hook and loop springs so to reduce the effect of loading. If you see pigtails after the random orbit step, hand sand until the pigtails have disappeared and use long strokes with the grain and a fresh abrasive with a rubber backing pad. The Diablo SandNet fiber pads extract the dusts and spent abrasive grains through the discs tiny holes for added cooling. This style of abrasive product was developed more than 15 years ago by Mirka and the Mirka Abranet pads are very popular with auto body shops as the modern automotive clear coats are super hard and actually contain floating transparent aluminum oxide flakes to protect the finish from scratches. Prefinished flooring products also use these clear catalyzed A/O topcoats and prepping them for repairs is also a very tough job. In general, these net coated abrasive pads are more suitable for refinishing topcoats and hard clearcoats rather than bare softwoods like decks and outdoor furniture. One more "thing" about pigtails and swirl marks in wood is that they often don't become visible until you wet the surface with a stain or solvent. The stain will over penetrate the swirl and bring it out front and center but then it is too late to correct it as the stain has penetrated the pigtail damaged wood surface. The best way to check on pigtails in softer woods (including expensive cherry woods etc) is to wipe the wood with some paint thinner to expose the pigtails and any other surface imperfections. Correct the now, not after you have moved through all the fine finish grades! Classic swirl marks are really a paint imperfection and can sometimes appear after polishing steps on dark or black high gloss finishes. The guys who do auto body detail work know all about these swirl marks and there are a bunch of tutorials on Youtube on how to fix them. Except for high end auto work, these style of high gloss black finishes are typically only found on Steinway pianos and other super gloss lacquer coated musical instruments (Gibson guitars etc) . So that is mostly some high end refinishing work and most doing it have access to buffing and polishing machines and rubbing compounds to remove these stubborn swirl marks.

They may last a little longer, but the edges become frayed after a while, which basically makes them useless. Won't buy again.

I was at my local HD store a while back so the lady told me to try this product. I was sceptical at first but she said that if I didn't like it bring it back for a refund so I did. I got some 80, 150, 220, and 320. It is the best sanding product I have ever used. I'm a wood worker and refinisher and I have my orbital sander hooked up to my shop vac and a Dust Cyclone and I never get clogged. I can also use the pads on my sanding blocks when I'm sanding by hand or between coats of sealer, or even by hand when you need to sand turned items, routed, knock out edges, distressed look. I am all about saving money and I use my 80 grid and when it's worn-out well it becomes 100 well almost or close enough. Bottom line this product is amazing and I have used just about everything out on the market.

I started using these sanding discs from Home Depot and love them as they draw air through them very well, they don't clog the way normal sand paper does and they last longer (I'm not sure about the 10X longer, but at least 4X longer). Also, I swear the 80 grit version gives me a finish like a regular 180 grit, yet takes down the high spots like an 80 grit is supposed to work - quickly. The negative is they are pricey, but I think they are well worth the cost premium.

I made 3 13 x 19 “ chopping blocks out of maple, cherry and walnut, for Christmas presents. Never seen anything like these before. I started with the 80 grit and worked my way all the way thru 320 and used two nets for each grit for everything. And to be honest, I could have just used one on each grit but my second go around was after mineral oil was conditioned in. When one would get clogged, I would just take it off and beat it with a stick to clean the pours and it was ready to keep going. I used them on my 5” rotary sander and went thru each grit pretty quickly

Disaster, I have no idea what anyone who rated this thing more than one star used it for. In my case, weathered, good condition redwood 2x6 deck railing that had been previously cleaned with wood cleaner. I just wanted to smooth out the surface. One 80 grit pad was fully consumed by my Bosch 5" orbital sander in about 10 linear feet. These things are terrible. See attached two picture. Shows what's left of the first pad, the second one still on the sander. Both completely destroyed.

I do not have a lot of experience with the sandnet sanding disks but the reason I am giving 5 stars is because the application pad that is included with these is AMAZING! I run a commercial woodshop and we build a lot of rustic furniture and the round surfaces tear up hook and loop backing pads. We used to have to replace these at least once a month on every sander and now I use the application pads that come with the sandnet disks and I have not had to replace a backing pad since! It has been over 5 months and I haven't replaced an application pad either! I have talked to Diablo directly and they have started offering these individually exclusively at Home Depot. I cannot wait to see these pop up on this site. I will be getting 50 of them.

They claim 10 times as long as ordinary sanding disks. I was sanding kitchen cabinet doors and using 1 (120 grit) regular disk per door, but I got these and did 6 doors and the disk still has life in it. So they aren't exaggerating. You can rinse them if they get clogged. They fit most 5" round sanders with the included connecting pad. By my finger test, they sanded as smooth or smoother than regular sandpaper. So I'm impressed.
