Yes you can, just note the blocks weigh 50lbs. Depending on your salt tank, can be harder to put block in.

Mine is a RainSoft water softener/filter. I would imagine any water softener that requires salt blocks.

Is there a way to use these without installing a water softener? If not is there a product that you can?

It is the same, just solid piece. Check with your softener company and I expect they will recommend the solid salt.

how do I know if I can use it in my softener and can it be mixed with pellets? Which is better pellets or block?

You can mix any form of salt for you softener. Your softener requires brine water to rinse and recharge the media that performs the softening.

can i use this for deer

I am concerned about some sources of salt that folks make available to deer. Salt marketed for different purposes often has additives to make it flow better, bleached to make it a certain color, etc. It is certainly possible that these additives could be detrimental to deer and other wildlife. Therefore, I only use feed-grade salt. I personally use Trophy Rock, which has 60+ trace minerals.

They changed the way this is packaged. It no longer has the cardboard sleeve which minimized the salt residue in your vehicle (an you when carrying). Now it has sticker labels that you have to peel off before you put into your softener. In reality, the labels split apart and you have to scrape them off or risk damage to your softener. What was an easy-peasy chore just got more entailed. I'm sure there will be people who merely place it in their system not thinking about it. Not happy with the new packaging, but very happy with the product.

This salt is good but it is very aggravating to have to take the big sticker off, occasionally it does not want to come off in 1 piece.
