Hi Mike, If this will have consistent or repetitive contact with fresh water, I would recommend treated plywood, or some other material, even with the coating. If it’s sporadic contact, this product should be fine, with the coating.

paint grade but stable
It's an interesting wood, it seems pretty clean and stable, it scratched and gouges easily. Grain is very subtile so I dont think it will look great under a clear finish. Its almost the consistancy of a basswood. I'm using it for paint projects so I think it will be fine or even very good compared to Pine that is pretty unstable and they are about the same price. I'll throw some different finishes on the scrap and see how it comes out. It does not have a pleasant smell, wood smell is one of the things I like about furnature building so that will probubly limit my use a little too.
