It has been said if I have a 240 outlet all I would need to do is get a plug and some wire. Are they talking about an electric dryer outlet? I have a gas dryer with a 240 plug right over it I'm not using. Can I buy a dryer plug and wire for this heater and have it work correctly and safely. If this works I would not need to hire a guy to wire it into the breaker box. That is already done for this dryer plug, right? Laundry room is right next to our garage. Is there a limit on how long of wire I can get? ( 25 to 30 feet of wire ok ). This way I can put it anywhere in my garage as a portable unit.
Asked by: wchound
I think that would be fine. Use large wire #10. Make sure that your dryer plug matches the existing outlet. If not, you can buy the correct configuration of plug. I would use SO cord.

So, is this or is it not an Infrared heater? If so what is all this talk about the fan blowing heat?
Asked by: ksbooney
All forms of what we call heat are infrared or microwaves. Whether it is gas or electric they radiate these waves. Some have reflectors to direct these out to a certain area. In this one, the air is heated in a box by the radiant heat and then the air is circulated by a fan to heat a larger area instead of confining the heat to a small location. Even a gas heater has a box that is heated by burning gas when the gas burns it produces a lot of infrared and microwaves and very little light. The box is then heated and the air blowing by it carries the heat to the room. As this is electric it does not need a box with an exhaust system to get did of the carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide which are the residue of the combustion. The fan carries away the heat from the coil so it does not become overheated and melt the element. Smaller heaters have a reflector and small fan and/or a tower to carry away the heat from the element. Having a larger fan to carry the heat away into the room makes the heater safer as the heat in the element does not become hot enough to ignite other combustibles in the room. Led's that produce a lot of light and very little radiant are cooler to the touch so they produce more light and less radiant heat. Heating coils produce more radiant heat and less light. Any heater produces radiant heat (microwaves and infrared ). Some may have fans and some may have reflectors or a combination of both.

My son wants to mount to garage ceiling. How do you turn on fan? Is there a remote or do you need a wall switch?

Asked by: Diane

6000-Watt Portable Commercial Industrial Hardwire Fan Heater with Adjustable Air Flow is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 98.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gets the job done Being that this heater basically requires you to install a separate breaker for just the unit itself as well as run new wiring to the unit I wish the heater had a simple inner panel to screw the wires to. Instead it has about 6 inches of the 3 wires available to hook it up. Just not ideal. At least not from a do it yourselfer like me. Also the anchors didn't work quite right for me so I anchored it with what I already had. In spite of the few hurdles I've got this unit in about 1000 square foot insulted garage living in Wisconsin. And it gets the garage warm in a couple hours when bringing it up from freezing. So it definitely gets the job done.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Garage Heater Installed in uninsulated garage. I ordered the 35 amp breaker online from Home Depot website because thats what was recommended in the instructions of the heater. You will probably have to do the same because 35 amp breakers are uncommon. I ran 10/3 wire from breaker box to additional switch in garage and then to heater. I mounted heater without L bracket. I used lag screw to ceiling joist. It was 20 degrees outside, set heater on 6000 and ran for 2 hours, then on 3000 and set thermostat. Heater does real well in a 20 x 20 garage. Fan kicked off and on automatically. Pleased with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from very happy with I am having a 1500 sqft house built and I bought the heater for the garage when finished. during the sheetrock/mudding process the large 12000 watt heater quit. I wired the heater with 10/3 wire and a range plug and plugged it into the range outlet as the contractor did for his heater. The contractor wanted to maintain 65 degrees in the house to dry the walls. I thought I would need more heaters but this heater heated the whole house, because no doors were installed, to 74 degrees. I had to adjust the heater for 65 degrees. This heater is outstanding.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great heater I bought this heater for a garage/workshop heater. The quality of this heater is very good. It puts out great heat even on the low setting. The heater has low at 3000 watt and high at 6000 watt, is thermostatically controlled so you can set it to a comfortable temp and it keeps it there. The thermostat also functions as an ON/OFF switch even though the instructions say to use the 30A breaker for a switch. The louvers across the front allow the hot air to be directed toward the floor and across the room so heat is not just lost in the ceiling. The fan is fairly quiet , yet puts out good air flow. My shop is about 800 square feet with 10 ft. high rafters/uninsulated ceiling (lower 8 ft. of the walls are insulated) with uninsulated rollup doors and it keeps the place warm on 32 degree days with the air flow pointed across the floor. This is a good quality heater and it works great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Now I'm warm in my garage I'm retired and woodwork full time year around in my garage. I'm 71 and swore, I'm not going to freeze working in my workshop/garage another winter! I shopped around and found this 6000 watt electric heater on Home Depot's website. It was just what I was looking for, powerful and heat the shop quick. My garage is 1000 sq. ft. and I'm out there early in the morning, I just can't take the cold anymore, I ordered this heater on line and received it a couple days ago, it took this old man two days to install it from the ceiling on the supplied brackets and ran the electrical through flex conduit. My shop is insulated, dry walled, and dual pane windows. This morning was 39 Deg. outside, in the garage was 57 deg., I turned the heater on and it brought the temp. up by 10 deg. in 2 1/2 hours, not to shabby for an electric heater. In 31/2 hours it was 73 deg. and I had to turn it down on low, it sure took the chill off quick. I went on the manufactures website and retail price was $274.00, I bought it from Home Depot for $164.89 and free shipping. Can't beat that deal ! The heater is Top Quality fabrication and should last for many years, quite too. Now I won't freeze out in my shop from now on!

Made in China, and the language difference may account for ongoing instruction changes. Earlier reviewers were told to use #10-2 wire, which is too light for this. By all means, use #8-2, together with either 35 amp or 40 amp circuit breakers. I prefer the 40 amp, as they are ok for this wire, and meet the National Electric Code aim of using 80% of the amp rating for continuous use. Recommend this heater highly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Could be better! I bought this heater to heat a 1000sq ft space. The online description suggested this heater for up to 1000sq ft. located in the basement and is insulated. Initial room temp of 50 degrees and wanted to achieve at least 70. The temp outside was 32 degrees. After an hour of running on full it finaly achieved 60 and struggled to move from there. I would recomend this heater for a smaller space less than 600sq ft.
