It has been said if I have a 240 outlet all I would need to do is get a plug and some wire. Are they talking about an electric dryer outlet? I have a gas dryer with a 240 plug right over it I'm not using. Can I buy a dryer plug and wire for this heater and have it work correctly and safely. If this works I would not need to hire a guy to wire it into the breaker box. That is already done for this dryer plug, right? Laundry room is right next to our garage. Is there a limit on how long of wire I can get? ( 25 to 30 feet of wire ok ). This way I can put it anywhere in my garage as a portable unit.
Asked by: wchound
I think that would be fine. Use large wire #10. Make sure that your dryer plug matches the existing outlet. If not, you can buy the correct configuration of plug. I would use SO cord.

So, is this or is it not an Infrared heater? If so what is all this talk about the fan blowing heat?
Asked by: ksbooney
All forms of what we call heat are infrared or microwaves. Whether it is gas or electric they radiate these waves. Some have reflectors to direct these out to a certain area. In this one, the air is heated in a box by the radiant heat and then the air is circulated by a fan to heat a larger area instead of confining the heat to a small location. Even a gas heater has a box that is heated by burning gas when the gas burns it produces a lot of infrared and microwaves and very little light. The box is then heated and the air blowing by it carries the heat to the room. As this is electric it does not need a box with an exhaust system to get did of the carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide which are the residue of the combustion. The fan carries away the heat from the coil so it does not become overheated and melt the element. Smaller heaters have a reflector and small fan and/or a tower to carry away the heat from the element. Having a larger fan to carry the heat away into the room makes the heater safer as the heat in the element does not become hot enough to ignite other combustibles in the room. Led's that produce a lot of light and very little radiant are cooler to the touch so they produce more light and less radiant heat. Heating coils produce more radiant heat and less light. Any heater produces radiant heat (microwaves and infrared ). Some may have fans and some may have reflectors or a combination of both.

I installed this in my wifes She Shed where she does arts crafts and what not. The building is 12 x 24. I hung the heater from the ceiling so it's not in the way. It is more than sufficient to keep the building comfortable. I did the install by myself, took about an hour and a half but then again I'm pretty handy. The one drawback that I would mention is the lack of an on/off switch, but thermostat seems to work well. The wife is happy and as you guys know.........

I did extensive research for a 220 heater for my single car garage pottery studio and selected this one. I have had the heater installed for about 3 weeks and have used it often. The garage is fully insulated and the weather has not yet dropped below 30 degrees. This heater works well and is probably the best value for my needs. The major benefit is that you can switch between 3K and 6K Watts with the switch on the front of the heater. The major downfall is that there is no on/off switch....you have to turn it off at the breaker. The sound is not too loud, it heats the studio in a reasonable amount of time, and appears to be well made. It was fairly easy to install on the ceiling, although I had an electrician do all of the electrical installation. All in all, I am satisfied with this purchase and do not know of another heater at this price that would do a better job.

Our temps have hovered in the 20's at night and 40's - low 50's during the day, and the heater has been able to easily maintain an even temp of around 65 in our attached 1 car garage day and night, on the 3000-Watt setting, and at less than halfway on the temp dial. We needed to have a 240 line run to our garage so the heater was installed by the electrician.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Freakn Outstanding Garage/Shop Heat Installed in my new shop, converted from my 10x20 carport. Insulated 3"foam all around. Aluminum top. This could be overkill if i left it cranked up for 20 minutes, and its 20* outside. The fan throws the heat atleast 20' as i can feel the warm air in the back of my shop. It is only mounted about 4' off the concrete and does well. All in all its a great heater. Getting the 240v to it is another story.

I did have a thermostat switch go bad in first 2 months from a bad connection . Contacted dealer they sent me a new switch free of charge and installed it and no problems every since after 2 yrs. Electric bill has gone up maybe $50 a mo. when using in winter time. Still cheaper then $30 a week kerosene i was buying....

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Breaker size In multiple reviews, I’ve read people using 10 gauge wire with a 35 amp breaker - not a good idea! 10 gauge wire is good for 30 amps and you should never oversize your breaker as it is meant to prevent the wire from overheating. The specs I just read for this unit call for a 25 amp breaker. However, a 30 amp breaker is the appropriate size for 10 gauge wire.

This heater can heat up my garage from 20deg to about 80 deg in roughly 20min, and maintains the temps great. Should have bought this years ago instead of messing with indirect kerosene heaters. Much quieter too!
