Product Overview

A shank with a screw-like head. Used primarily with Dremel polishing bits and accessories. For best results, insert the mandrel all the way into the tool and then back it out slightly before tightening down. This provides plenty of shank for the collect or chuck to hold onto. Simply remove the screw, line up a cut-off wheel or sanding band over the hole in the shank and replace and tighten the screw.
  • Shank with screw like head
  • Use with discs and wheels
  • Plenty of shank for the collet or chuck to hold onto

  • Compact depth guide: round front that can be used for tracing a pattern or following an edge
  • Compact depth guide: compatible with the vacuum attachment to keep your work place clean
  • Shank diameter 1/8 in., 3 mm, 2 mm
  • Insert the small screw through the hole in the cut-off wheel then tighten the screw into the mandrel's threaded head

No, this mandrel is only to be used to attach cut off wheels to rotary tools. Saw max blades are only to be put on saw max tool. There is no mandrel needed, only the washer along with the lock bolt.

Dremel's 1 1/2 inch Mandrel is the basic Rotary Tool Mandrel for attachments since I first bought my first Dremel 28 years ago, it has the widest selection of Attachments that Dremel makes which will work with it. As Dremel has progressed with its line of Rotary Tools their capabilities of their attachment designs are better supported by Its EZ Lock Mandrel and attachments made to fit securely into it. If you review Home Depot site or the Dremel catalog the attachments which are listed will allow you to accomplish every task the Dremel line of Rotary Tools will allow.

Poor quality
Removed screw from mandrel to place a cutting disc on it but the screw wouldn't go all the way back in. Tried to back it out and the screw broke. Poor quality.

I've cut plastic, metal and shaped & trimmed small wood projects with a Dremel for decades. I've never had the slot in the screw head strip, other reviewers might be using the wrong size screwdriver and/or not holding the screwdriver steady? <That's not a criticism, just pointing it out. I agree a phillips head and a larger overall head size could be an improvement. As small as the holding screw is, they can break. Having said that, I've never had one break UNLESS I wasn't holding the tool firmly and keeping it straight as I was cutting metal. I have had the 402B fiber cut-off discs break. I recently replaced 8 metal-framed basement windows. While I used a 4-1/2" right angle die grinder to cut the majority of the frame, but because of the guard, the Dremel was able to get into the tight small areas where the big cut-off wheel couldn't. I didn't nick or cut the brick once by using the Dremel tool.

Below 2 star avg. on most famous accessory
Customer review from dremel.com logo
I have owned four Dremel over the span of 25 years and it shocks me how poor quality and a sub 2 star review does not inspire a change in design. I am tired of throwing away money on replacing these mandrels when the screw breaks or gets lost.

We are sorry you're having trouble with the 402. Your assessment is somewhat correct - the mandrel will wear over time and for any user's safety should be replaced when the screw becomes worn. We do have a new design called an EZ Lock Mandrel. We will contact you directly to provide more information on where that's available.

Screw issues
Customer review from dremel.com logo
Brought a dremel set like years ago and finally got a chance to try out some accessories and guess what? The Mandrel attactment for the cutting wheels is defected with same problem like others, it has a bad screw that wont unscrew so can't try or use the cutting wheels

Just like the other problems noted, the screw broke off in the mandrel. Parts must be made of terrible metal.
I don't know what alternatives I have for being able to use the Dremel Tool cutting discs without the mandrel and disc-keeper screw. They are vital to the use of this tool and ahould be made of high quality metal. I ask Dremel to please improve the metal used for the mandrel screw. Thank you.

We will have someone from our team contact you. Place the 402 mandrel in the rotary tool first, then take off the screw.
