Questions & Answers

I would like to buy the Dremel 4200, but they do not carry it as inventory in several Home Depots that i visited. They said i would have to order

on line. I am in the military and i have a 10% off with credit card purchase coupon also. How do I signify this when ordering on line to get the discounts.
Asked by: Hank
I don't believe you can, you may have to do an in store pickup or or just go to your nearest store and buy it there.

What is the difference between the 4000, and the 4200 besides the no wrench collar ?

Asked by: Sharky
The 4200 features the Easy Change™ mechanism that uses different collets than other Dremel rotary tools, and the smallest size collet is currently not available for the 4200. So if the need is for smaller shank accessories presently the 4200 cannot accommodate this. This is the only difference between the Dremel 4000 and Dremel 4200. The 4200 has the Easy Change with a different style collet and the 4000 does not.

Customer Reviews

Dremel 4200 Series 1.6 Amp Variable Speed Corded Rotary Tool Kit with 47 Accessories and Carrying Case is rated 2.5 out of 5 by 280.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great upgrade to the Dremel tool This is the 2nd Dremel tool I've owned and I have to say wow. The addition of the quick change was long overdue. I never understood why there wasn't a key-less chuck system for the Dremel tools, and there still isn't. ha. The quick change is handled by pulling back two levers on the front near the collet. This is such a great improvement and greatly increases the utility of this device. The kit itself comes with more attachments than I'm ever likely to use, but I'm excited about the circle cutter as I'm doing a bathroom project later this month and it will come in handy. The tool itself has 5k-35k rpm and is very versatile. Comes in a great hard case too. If you have an older Dremel that you use a lot or if you were ever thinking of getting one, this is the piece to upgrade to or to get for your first kit. The only suggestion I would make is to get a pair of safety glasses if you don't already have one. For the price you'd expect them to throw a pair in the box since it seems to have everything else in it already.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stopped working, just one month old! I bought the 4200 Dremel about a month ago. It was great when it was working, but it just stopped working for no apparent reason. It is brand new. I've used it only a few times, just on the weekends. It will not switch on. I read the manual to look for possibilities. I checked the brushes which seem to be just fine. Again, it is brand new. The motor sounded fine and there were no apparent problems leading up to its abrupt stop. This is extremely disappointing, especially considering the cost of this tool vs. the one month life I got out of it. Now I have to deal with a repair. It was too expensive to just replace it. Of course it broke over the weekend and there is no customer service on the weekend. Most upsetting is that I'm not sure I can locate my receipt. When I purchased it, I was under the impression that the Dremel brand is very reputable and there would be no need to act on the manufacturer's warranty.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dangerous Tool Bought this 4200 tool two weeks ago to replace my old and dead 400xpr. Bearings finally fried one month ago. This is third model purchased. Have been using these tools for major remodeling projects. Can not force them to hard as bearings and casing are light to medium use.The quick change sounds and looks great. On and off button is much better in terms of ease. Finally, someone woke up on the button. Complained about their design on this many years ago. It is longer than previous versions. Now for the cons. Used this on two separate remodeling projects. The bits will slide out like a worn down collet on previous versions. Had a bit fly out completely. You will have to stop periodically to push it back in. Two, front part of output shaft gets hot to hold on for tedious manuvering. More so than previous version. With these issues makes this tool highly dangerous. Will return this as defective. Looks like the engineer, designer, and ceo fell asleep on this model. It should be recalled completly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality This is the third one in three days. I was very happy to see this product in the store for the amount of features it had. I cut a 6 inch hole and tried swapping the circle cutter for the regular peace and it wouldn't come off. I tried spinning it off but the threaded part of the tool kept spinning with the attachment. So I went back to the store and got another one. Now with the new one I was using the regular cutter. I tried removing that one and it did the same thing. What I realized the second time it did it was that the plastic attachments threads melted to the dremel and due to this the plastic attachment would not come off and in fact would damage the dremel. I returned this one and looked for a different tool that had similer attachments that didn't have plastic attachments but there weren't any. I needed to finish the project I started so I am now on my third, I went ahead and got the 1 year warranty on it. I'm sure the people at the store are getting sick of seeing me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible experience with this product... I bought this thing in March or April and I have had so many issues with it. I sent it back to dremel because of a faulty switch and then they send me back another remanufactured one, which is alright in most cases but it had horrid chatter issues with its locking mechanism and surprise surprise the thing just quit on me again. I don't use this thing a great deal but I use it enough to say that it is one of the work horses of my craft and I'm just dissapointed beyond measure. My father had one of these things from back in the 70s-80s and it still works like a charm but this thing can't even last a year.... It really makes me doubt this company and new products it puts out. I was really considering buying a 3D printer and micro dremel from this company but now I am really having doubts on this brand. Don't waste your money on this product and don't rush into buying anything new from dremel because you might end up getting burned....

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Works great while it lasts....but it doesn't last When I began wood carving three years ago, the Dremel line was a dream come true. My first Dremel was a 3000 series.  After about nine months of good performance, the unit suddenly quit in mid-project. No problem, I'll buy another unit. The second unit lasted a shorter time....about three months. Back to the store for another unit. this one expired shortly thereafter.....-maybe it's time to try a 4000 series unit. Died within two months. Finally, the new "high performance" 4200 model comes out. I managed to kill it in one month. The bottom line here is this: I love the products, but the average life span (despite brush changes and frequent clearing of all openings with an air compressor) is way too short (at least for a non-disposable product). At over $100 a pop, I'd like to see some longevity. PS: I returned two of the units for repair.....lasted less than a week when I got them back.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I went through THREE of these in a month First one worked for a day, then the next day wouldn't start. I exchanged it at the store I had purchased it at, then when I got the new one home it ran for less than 5 minutes before it had the same exact problem. I really wanted to just get my money back and buy a different product, but so many people swear by their Dremels I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. I thought maybe this was my fault if it happened twice in a row and read some suggestions online that recommended running the tool unloaded at full speed for 10 minutes to seat the motor brushes before use. I did that to my third tool and it managed to finish the project I was working on, so I thought that must have been the problem. After that it went in the drawer for 2 weeks before another need arose. I turned it on to check it, it was running fine, put a bit in, put on my gloves and safety glasses to cut a small piece of metal, and then of course it wouldn't turn on. I will be returning it as soon as I can for a refund and I will never be purchasing another Dremel product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dremel made things right! I wrote a review at the beginning of May in regards to my 4200 and how the pinch collet had failed. The next day I was contacted by email and was offered a new 4200 or a similar model. I opted for the 4000 as I like the old school wrench version. In less than 10 days I recieved the brand new one and a bunch and I mean a bunch of goodies for the inconvenience. Now this company backs it's products! Thanks very much!
