Questions & Answers

Is there a program I can download to see if I'm capable of learning to use the printer?

Asked by: Turp50
Just take your time and try out different things in the modeler until you get comfortable. Then start printing, if you don't want to use up a bunch of filament. Dremel does make very good products and they are 100% American construction; the designs, components, plastics, metals, etc. are all American. I honestly have seen Dremel products still in action that have to be 25 years old more. So you are getting excellent quality.

What is the operating voltage for this?

Can I use it in Europe with 240 volt of I change the cord? Or does it require a different power supply or something?
Asked by: Andreas
The back of mine says 100 - 240 volts. It doesn't specify the frequency, not sure if it would work in Europe or not. I'm using 120 Volts 60 Hz.

Idea Builder 3D Printer with Built-In Wifi and Guided Leveling is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Printer was designed with ease of use in mind Only had the printer for a few weeks and I am already impressed with the print quality and how easy it was to use this printer. Set up on other printers can take hours but the Dremel was up and running in less than 10 minute and I was able to print a chess piece easily with the included filament which was more than enough to get me started. The software was intuitive and i could easily make my own prints and print them with a push of a button. I am currently running the printer in another room while writing this and I have no fear of mistakes while I am away as this printer is super safe and quiet because of nice enclosed design. Overall I recommend this printer to a consumer or an educator for safety and simplicity, Great Job Dremel You really nailed it with this printer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Printer! My school district purchased this printer last May. The printer itself is well built and extremely reliable. We have had very few failed prints and the leveling of the print bed is extremely easy. Everything from the operation of the printer to the software is very intuitive. Additionally, the customer service has been excellent. We like this printer so much that our district is planning on purchasing a second!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Requires, But Also Rewards Hard Work Out of the box, the Dremel 3D40 Idea Builder is a well a built tool. Dremel has put together a machine that avoids much of the fuss and bother of setting up a 3d printer. It is a comparably simple entry into the world of Fused Deposition Modeling (“FDM”) using Polylactic Acid (“PLA”) extruded filament to produce small (< 10” x 6” x 6”) 3d objects. The machine is driven by Print Studio, an open source software product from Autodesk. The Print Studio software is able to handle and convert files originally created in various CAD programs such as SketchUp, Fusion 360, and TinkerCAD, however, new users will have to devote considerable effort to mastering a new set of tools. Dremel provides responsive customer support. I would recommend this as an addition to a home workshop, home school classroom, or the bedroom of a diligent, technically oriented teen. How I Tested The Machine I brought the machine, still sealed in it’s shipping container into my (STEM Shop) classroom and allowed a small group of 11-14 year-olds to have at it without any intervention from me. Within 20 minutes they had it up and running, albeit, in a stand alone configuration, using the built in models. It was great fun to watch the machine almost magically generate a tree frog. After allowing the students to play with the machine during the last week of school, I brought it home to my own shop and I have been pushing it to MY limits for the past 2 weeks. Problems, Praises, and a Warning I did have trouble getting the machine connected to my school’s local area network and getting the Print Studio software to run. Teachers may need help from their IT department, and may need to consider acquiring a stand alone computer to set up a 3d printer work center. Unfortunately, I was not able to run Print Studio from my main work computer. This is a problem because I have it set up with a large screen, digitizing tablet, and other tools designed to make CAD work easier. Dremel did provide prompt, courteous, helpful support. I ended up needing to run the Autodesk Print Studio software from my personal laptop computer, which is less than optimal for serious CAD work. This means doing most of the design work on my main computer and then transferring files to my laptop before slicing and printing the model. This does complicate the fabrication process, but it is likely due to the nature of my computer resources, and not the fault of the machine. Buyers of this machine or ANY 3d printer will want to be sure that their computer is up to handling it. Assuming that you are serious about using the machine to prototype original models and useful objects, you MUST be prepared to do some serious work learning the entire CAD/CAE/CAM tool chain. This is not a trivial task and if you are not either already trained, or prepared to take on a serious learning task, you will not be happy with this machine, or any other 3d printer, CNC machine, or laser cutter. More Detail: The machine comes loaded with a small set of models that can be printed immediately from the machine without connecting it to a computer, including a full chess set and a number of other useful and decorative items. Beyond that, Dremel has provided a tool set, through the AutoDesk Print Studio program, that makes it comparably simple to print small 3d models using PLA filament. Print Studio also allows you to access a growing library of prepared models directly from the Dremel website. Further, Print Studio can convert files downloaded from a number of other web depositories such as Thingaverse and Myminifactory to the format needed by the Idea Builder. Dremel also provides links to a variety of free CAD/CAE/CAM tools that presumably work with the Idea Builder. I have not yet had time to explore them all, and would caution buyers that EVERY machine of this type will require the user to develop and master a somewhat complex tool chain. Dremel has done much to simplify this tool chain, but there are some sacrifices and limitations made for that simplicity and buyers should be aware of them: The machine is optimized to use PLA filament only, it does not have a heated print bed and the extruder is not designed to use other materials. PLA does have the advantage of being a cornstarch, rather than petroleum based plastic, but it does require more post production (sanding, filling, priming, painting) to get a fine grade finish. The machine is intended to use Dremel branded PLA only, due to the configuration of the spool holder. Dremel branded PLA is NOT excessively priced, so there is not a lot of reason to use third party filament, nevertheless, I did successfully experiment with Hatchbox branded PLA by rewinding it onto an empty Dremel branded spool. PLA is a low temperature material and depending on the design of the model, may not have the strength of other FDM materials. However, makers who learn to work within the limitations of PLA can still produce useful and adequately sturdy parts for, for example, quad copters and RC cars, as well as decorative models, patterns, and prototyping components. The machine is well adapted to indoor use at home or in a classroom, and the clear plastic doors of the machine housing make it usable in the dusty environment of the home or school shop/makerspace as well. There is a mild odor from the corn based PLA filament when the machine is operating, but it is no more objectionable than the smell of typical craft and hobby materials and should cause no problem in a reasonably ventilated space. The hot end of the machine is moderately well shielded and cools quickly at the end of a build, reducing the likelihood of injury to irresponsible users (users with common sense need not worry at all). Overall, I recommend this machine.

I am seeing a high 4 for this unit, however I want to recommend against it. Its overly proprietary, and you're going to pay for that. Filament, don't buy theirs and you void the warranty... Wireless does not seem to work, it says its connected but I am getting nothing in the "about" page as I am instructed. The prints are sub par, because the wireless isn't working I am stuck using a USB stick to print (who wants to print that way). You are unable to print STL they MUST be Dremel files. You can buy far better 3d printers for far less. Dremel you're a great brand but you let me down on this one. The entire machine is plastic, it feels cheap and like its going to fall apart. Did I mention you have to use their filament?

Has a library of models free to use in the Dremel website. And, with the help of freely available software I have been able to create models of my own. One of my first projects was a generator using magnets and coils. The carcass was made with my 3D printer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Useful, but Initially Complicated Having never used a 3D printer before, I looked forward to seeing just how easy (or difficult) it would be. Instructions were reasonably clear with some exceptions. One step was left off the step-by-step set-up, but I was able to figure it out. I had to read the instructions at times and look at the unit thoroughly to become familiar with each part in order to set it up correctly. Once set up, it is important to either use the USB or connect to WiFi or computer directly in order to continue. Those instructions were a little bit fuzzy initially. I opted for the USB because it just makes everything easier. I was able to download a few additional designs from their website. Currently, designs are limited, but the printer worked quite well, using the downloaded plans. Note that it sometimes takes HOURS, not minutes to create your 3D object.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable 3D printing I really appreciate the new features Dremel was releasing with the new 3D40. 3D printing is now very reliable. Was already printing a lot for personal use and I never had any clogging issues and the print came out all fine in its quality. Also with the Print Studio software it is really easy to just download files, repair them, add supports and get started with the print job.
