will this cut a 5/8 '' bolt

Asked by monster123 January 2, 2013

NO. I tried it on a 1/2" foundation bolt that was supposed to go through the wood wall plate. I used the carbide blade. After about 5 minutes something in the tool broke, no oscillation. Previously I had cut #6 drywall screws with it with no issues. The 1/2" steel bolt did it in.

Is it the 120 volt version; does it have a wood cutting tool in the kit or must I buy it separately?

it comes with about 5 tools.

I bought dremel mm20 today. While using it on cabinetry work the chuck shifted about 6 degrees off center. I don't see how to correct the problem.

Answer

I would first remove the chuck from the unit. The chuck can be entirely removed. Once removed, check the motor shaft to ensure you don't have any play. If you do, then you'll need to take it back to HD for a replacement. If the shaft doesn't move, reinstall and tighten the chuck and see if you have any play. Your unit is a few days old, so any situations such as you've mentioned are most certainly covered under the warranty.

I was building a wine rack under the stairs to the second floor and needed to make precision cuts to the existing molding and wall board without damaging the existing hardwood floors. The Multi-Max was the perfect tool for the job. I now have several more projects in which the Multi-Max will be essential.

Great tool
Customer review from dremel.com logo
The tool performs as described. It is very unique in its ability to cut molding while on the wall saving a lot of time on many projects. The blades cut cleanly and effortlessly. I highly recommend this tool to all do-it-yourselfers as well as professional carpenters.

The Dremel oscillating tool is versatile with numerous available attachments. It comes with a wood/dry wall saw blade, flexible scraper, sander attachment and paper, as well as an additional wood saw blade. There are several additional tool attachments available depending upon your needs. I have already added the multi-knife; the grout blade looks very helpful as well (although if you already have a grinder you wouldn't need it) It works by short, rapid side to side movements (not to be confused with the separate rotary tools that spin and have completely different attachments). So far I have used it to cut through sheet rock to install a bathroom exhaust fan, break down thick cardboard boxes, and to make small detail wood cuts. It definitely works better on the drywall to make clean straight cuts compared with a hand saw and is faster cutting thick cardboard boxes versus a traditional box cutter. Cuts are cleaner although it may take you a few seconds longer. Overall it combines multiple tools into one....if you already have all of those, this tool isn't for you. If you want to avoid getting a finishing sander, hack saw, grinder, drywall saw, etc go for this one. Really the only inconvenience is getting it out and plugging it in. You may find yourself reaching for your old tools for quick fixes but for longer jobs this tool can save a lot of fatigue and be more precise.

The Multi-Max had been on my "tools I'd eventually like to own" list for quite some time. It's one of those tools that just makes certain jobs go a whole lot easier. This kit comes with several different attachments to get you started: a wood/drywall semi-circular blade, a wood flush-cut blade, a flexible scraper, and a sanding attachment. They attach with a pretty straightforward chuck that is opened/tightened with the included allen key. The chuck allows you to mount the blades at different angles in order to use them the most efficiently/ergonomically. Make sure you really crank it down though - the first time I used it, the chuck backed off and dropped the saw blade while I was cutting with it! The tool has a separate on/off switch and speed control, which lets you turn the tool off and then resume at the same speed again. I tried out most of the attachments with pretty good results: - The wood flush-cutting tool made short work of some half-inch plywood. The blade also has fractions of an inch markings so you can tell how deep of a cut is being made. One of the clear advantages the Multi-Max has over regular rotary tools is that it can cut into a flat surface or long dowels without clearance issues. I don't know how many times I've had to angle a cut because my rotary tool wouldn't reach far enough in with a cutting disk before the body of the tool got in the way. - The drwyall/wood semi-circular blade was pretty slow-going on the pine that I tried it on, due to the smaller teeth. It was easier to control, but I think I'd rather use a jigsaw for such a task, as long as space isn't a constraint. The blade also worked surprisingly well for cutting half-inch PVC pipe, without much burning/melting happening. I haven't tried it on drywall yet, but I expect that it would perform even better on that. - The sanding attachment worked very well for bare wood, and you can really get it into the nooks and crannies that a circular orbital sander won't cover. I didn't notice any swirl marks or cross-grain scratches, but I didn't stain the wood that I used it on either. So unless the cross-grain sanding just isn't visible to the naked eye, you should be good for finish sanding with the Mult-Max. A pretty good-sized carrying case is included, with spots for fixing all of the attachments that came with the tool. The case also provides a generous area for stowing the cord, which is often a big headache when it comes to handheld tool cases. I haven't had to stop and rearrange the cord even once in order to close the case. The only downside to this tool is how expensive the accessories are for it. They get you started with a good assortment, but the replacements will really hit your wallet. For example, their brand-name sanding pads are about a buck apiece, and you have to buy them in multi-grit packs (or at least I couldn't find any single-type packs). Luckily, there are off-brand accessories, and Dremel does make an adapter that allows you to use other brand's accessories as well. I'll have to try some of them and see if they stand up to the task, or if the Dremel accessories are just more expensive due to quality.

Good for tight places

The Dremel Multimax is one of the handiest tools I have. I've used it to cut vent openings in flooring, scrape grout from a tile floor and sand in difficult to reach places. The variable speed is very helpful in cutting different types of materials. I also found that the motor in the MM20 runs much more smoothly and is less noisy than my MM6300. It is less jumpy and easier to control. The storage case has places to secure accessories so they don't fall out all over the case. I do find that the blades wear down quickly, especially going through laminate, which seems harder to cut. It is a great tool for the parts of projects which require finer detailing, which can often be done right on the spot.

The Dremel Multi-Max, is an oscillating tool that for lack of better terms doesn't transfer the feeling of vibration to the user (which is a good thing). This Dremel has a wide range of odd shaped attachments (for purchase separately- kit comes with 4) that can do all sorts of jobs including sanding, drywall cutting, door jams, etc etc. Changing attachments is simple and fast enough to not hinder progress. This tool is not for cutting 2x4's or any major job, it is designed to help expedite routine jobs like cutting drywall, or sanding small areas. If your a tool guy like me this will fit nicely into your garage and be used regularly for small fixes around the house.

Very solid tool

The Dremel MM20 Multi-Max Oscillating cutter is a solid and robust tool that is going to see a lot of use in my workshop. The motor unit has a very solid feel and is clearly well engineered. Comfortable to hold. Blade changes are very quick and easy and is accomplished by loosening a bolt with the supplied Allen key. Most blades simply require the bolt to be loosened but the sanding head needs the bolt to be removed in order to thread it through the sanding head. Not a problem. I used the sanding head to remove the rust and paint off a steel column and it worked very well. Using the MM480 wood cutting blade I was amazed at how easily it cuts through wood. It is like a hot knife going through butter. It has already come in handy in correcting the placement on a groove made for a sliding door of a cabinet I made. It would be nice if each blade had its catalog number stamped on it so that one could easily consult the speed chart. The motor seems strong (as one would expect for 2.3 Amperes). Dremel really seems to understand that high speed (and low force) is a very effective way of cutting stuff!

Very handy
Customer review from dremel.com logo
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this oscillating tool recently and have only used it once to trim bottom of door facing so a vinyl rug would slide under it. In a few minutes i had the facings trimmed on both doors. Love it and I tend to trust the Dremel name too!
