Questions & Answers

Does this also work well for cutting the 1/4 round finish molding sometimes used or does the molding need to be flat?

Asked by: Bernie
I believe so just make sure you have it clamped tight

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! I just love my Saw max and hate cutting crown moulding. This set up gets some getting used to but all in all it really worked well. there is a definitive line of sight showing exactly where the cut will be in the material so you aren't cutting blind. You need to use the flush cut wheel in order to get the precise cut. It makes compound miter cuts up to 9/16" thick. If you don't yet have a saw max, now's time to get both!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saw-Max Crown Molding Guide Cutting Crown Molding can be a frustrating challenge for the advanced DIY’er as well as a highly qualified Carpenter. Mistakes are highly visible and can waste material. The most experienced carpenters often use a large compound miter saw. The Dremel Saw-Max Crown Molding Guide is a portable, compact solution for cutting crown molding. It’s meant to be used in conjunction with the Dremel SM20 Saw-Max and SM600 wheel. The Molding guide has four clearly marked cutting areas to help make complicated cuts easy and a clear line of sight showing exactly where the cut will be in the material. The Crown Molding Guide allows users to make these complicated cuts easily and accurately, without needing large and expensive tooling.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't Work For Me I read with interest the reviews posted by others, because for the life of me I cannot understand how to use this simple plastic crown molding miter tool. Unfortunately, despite the somewhat glowing reviews, at the time of this review there was not one picture posted showing the tool in action. I also used my smartphone QR reader to try to locate some manufacturer guidance using the QR tag printed on the box, but all I got in return was an “Oops!” page not found error (see pictures). Also, the Dremel website had no video guidance showing how to use this tool. I easily assembled the 3-piece plastic tool and attempted to position my Dremel model 402 Saw-Max as shown in the pictures printed on the packaging box. However, when sitting the edge of my Saw-Max against the fence of this guide, I was unable to position the saw blade of my Saw-Max through the cutting hole of the guide. Even if I angled the Saw-Max to allow the blade to go through the guide, it still hardly cleared the plastic deck of the guide to cut the wood trim that sits underneath the guide. I’ve attached some pictures, but they might not clearly illustrate the obstructions (sorry!). I don’t know if I have a defective guide, or if I’m just an idiot who can’t figure this out (certainly possible). I'm not one to easily give up, but this shouldn't be complicated and after spending 15 minutes with this, I could not get it to work. To put this in perspective, I consider myself to be an above-average DIY, and I usually fabricate crown moldings using a dedicated miter saw (see picture of some of my work using a dedicated saw). I was hoping this product would allow me to shortcut the effort of having to pull out my big saw but unfortunately this little tool did not work for me. Don’t confuse my disappointment about this miter tool with my feelings about the Saw-Max itself which is a wonderful saw to have and use. It would be helpful if there were a “how to” video of this product posted somewhere. But based on my experience I cannot recommend the product.
