NOT MADE IN CHINA
This model - and this model only - from Dualit is NOT MADE IN CHINA. This is currently the only commercially available toaster in the world not made in China. Okay, now that I've established that, let me tell you how much we like it. I liked so many of the colors, but at the time I purchased the one I have, the brass was offered at the lowest price, so it settled my choice. We love it. Let me explain how it is mechanical, since I didn't "get" exactly how it worked until I worked it for myself...You put in your bread, you manually lower it with the lever, you move the dial, which heats the elements until the time runs out, and then you can either manually lift the lever to retrieve your toast, or, you can leave it down for a bit to keep it warm. That's it. It doesn't automatically pop up, but a neat feature is, you can lift the lever at any time during toasting to check on it. You can choose for one side to toast only, and it is the left side. I love the rack accessory; it's how I brown buns for hamburgers. I also love how wide the crumb tray is, I believe it won't ever be as crumby inside as my old toasters always were. It's a great machine. As my daughter told me, everyone needs a high quality gadget every once in a while - for us, this Dualit toaster, made in England, is it!

After many years of research and debating, i bought the Dualit classic and am completely happy with my decision. Here are the reasons:
1) It is not made in china. Although the wires are sourced from china, this CLASSIC version is still hand made in the UK. According to Dualit customer service, only toasters from their classic line are still handmade in the UK.
2) Simple design, no costly computer circuit board to break/replace.
3) Although my kitchen is contemporary, the old-school look doesn't look out of place. It's kind of growing on me.
4) It does what it's supposed to do. It toasts bagels, breads, english muffins, and allows you to peek at progress by lifting the lever during the toasting process. Toast comes out perfectly!
5) The sandwich basket was a huge selling feature too. I was considering purchasing a george forman grill recently. But sadly, they are all made in china. The Dualit sandwich basket is a good alternative to create hot sandwiches.
6) It doesn't take up much counter space.
7) No annoying bells or bings.
8) So far, I've had it for a few weeks and have toasted bread, bagels, english muffins (both frozen and room temperature). Perfect!
9) IT IS NOT MADE IN CHINA.

We are extremely satisfied with the quality of our new toaster. It is well built and old school. The instructions for operation are essential as some training is needed for this "attended appliance". The results are definitely worth the investment of time and money. We love the distinctive design.

single and double side toasting
My previous new toaster did not do a good job of toasting. Had gotten tired of using toaster ovens that are less efficient, take up more counter space. I mostly toast anyway. A new Black & Decker toaster looked attractive, but didn't toast bread to brown.
Replaced it with this Dualit, which has a timeless, beautiful, Art Deco design, weighs a good bit more with sculpted steel sides than the last toaster.
Looks well made and upon first use; browned the bread nicely.
There is a feature to toast one or both sides.
If you are serious about toast; this is a good option to consider.

the dial on this toaster stopped working after 15 months! it is a really fire hazard, the dail does not click when the timer is done, so it stays on and burns the toast and causes the fire alarm to go off! I would not recommend buying this $300 toaster, save your money and buy a 100 toaster that you can replace when it breaks, very disappointed trying to get a replacement toaster but no resolution yet after two calls.
