I’m having a really hard time threading the vertical slats through the holes in the horizontal bars. Hints please!

Answer

Yes, they are very tight, and not always well aligned. We had to use a knife (a box cutter) to enlarge some of them, and a mallet to carefully drive the verticals through.

How does this anchor to the ground with the brackets?

As I recall, the trellis came furnished with two pieces of galvanized 'L' shaped steel, designed to fit up inside the square shaped sides. You tapped these pieces in stopping below the location where the first cross piece came into the side, and the remainder of each steel piece presses into the soil. The instructions may have suggested installing the pieces into the soil, then placing the trellis sides down onto the metal. This installation will probably be satisfactory, as long as the trellis is supported at a second location higher up along wall or side of a structure. In my case, I knew the free standing trellis would be subject to wind loading so I devised a mounting with additional parts that after 3 years now has performed without fail. This consisted of 2.5 foot pieces of 1" sch-40 plastic pipe ( which fits almost perfectly inside the sides ), strap clamps, and lead anchors that held the pipe to the side of a concrete slab. bottom length of each buried pipe was back filled and firmly tamped to complete the install. The plants being supported have grown enough to help support the trellis on their own. Not all plants may be woody or strong enough to complement the trellis with their own support, so you could have to devise your own solution to suit. Besides the base modification, I have angled braces that tie to the trellis, about 2/3 way up on the plant side that are almost completely camouflaged by the shrub the trellis supports.

I would like to mount this on a concrete block/stucco wall sideways …. does the top of the trelli...

Not exactly. The top of the trellis has the two domed caps as pictured. The bottom of the two main posts is hollow and comes with custom fit stakes in order to secure it in the ground.

Is the trellis strong enough for a climbing rose?

The trellis comes with short aluminum angle (90 degree) stakes to put in the ground or cement to hold the trellis upright. Because I wanted to put Jasmine on the trellis that I bought (7 total), I modified it be replacing the short "stakes" provided with longer four foot aluminum angle "stakes" to give it the strength to hold the heavier Jasmine. I also placed them in a cement foundation. I hope this is of some help. John

Is there hardware included to attach to a wall? or instructions on what is needed to attach to a wall?

There is hardware, angle iron to put on the ground for stabilizing on the dirt. You would have to anchor it to your wall, it is plastic, so easy drilling for the bolt or screw to attach it to the wall.

Could not put together
The slots in the horizontal pieces where are you have to insert the vertical slats are so poorly engineered that it is impossible to fit the slats through. See pictures. The holes are not aligned from side to side so that the slay ends up going in at an angle. There is no way it can meet the holes in the next horizontal piece. If you have tried to put this together, you know what I’m talking about. I called the company and I emailed them, send them photographs and explained the problem, and they send me more horizontal bars. A few of them were usable. I am sending back all three trellises, it was a waste of my time. It’s too bad because of the materials are nice and it’s this darn thing we’re together it would be really nice. Apparently they have no quality assurance department at this factory.

Pretty, hard to assemble.
This item was a great deal for the price. Shipping was great. I ordered three units. The first one was a bit easier to put together. The second one was a challenge to put together. Their are five slats you need to insert through the other pieces and it was difficult pulling them through. Other than that, assembly was fairly easy. Looks good in its new spot.

an hour extra work
The design seems simple and easy to put together. WRONG! The holes that the cross pieces are supposed to go through were not made large enough. I spent over an hour using a power drill to widen 90 opening to make the pieces fit.

I’m not gonna lie, these were a little difficult to put together, it took two of us. I have one suggestion, FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS, it got much easier after we did! Once together, they are very sturdy and very attractive! I highly recommend these trellises.
