Questions & Answers

does this heater give much fume

does this heater give much fume
Asked by: Lillie
No, if you keep the wick at 1/2 inch flame height. See photo, it must be adjusted down over the first hours of each use.

will this heat an uninsulated basement to prevent pipes from freezing?

Asked by: jtravis
Yes, this heater will help prevent pipes from freezing if placed close to the main line entry point in your basement. However, an electric radiator style heater is safer for your application and unlike the kerosene heater it will not require frequent attention and will not give off fumes or CO gas. I would recommend the kerosene heater as an emergency back-up if your power goes out and use the electric radiator for the winter season.

23,800 BTU Indoor Kerosene Portable Heater is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 120.

Was using electric but my PG&E bill was increased and never really was warm. The heater has surpassed my expectations. The initial priming of the wick absorbed quite a bit of kerosene on first use. Easy to light after primed. The only time I smelled kerosene is when it is filled or after I turn it off. I am having difficulty finding bulk kerosene in my area. The hand pump included is slow and tedious to use, I use a funnel. I am thinking of buying a small dolly to place heater on, gets heavy and difficult for me to move into center of garage. I saved the box and taped the flaps up and together. I am using the box over the heater when it is not being used to protect it from dust and getting banged up in the garage. I had a round encaustic thermometer that I have placed on the top of the grill work. Fit perfect. Records that the heater is consistently reaching 300 degrees when operating. I have reached 75 degrees at one point and opened the door to the house to transfer heat. Worked great to warm the living space with having to bring the unit inside.

It looks good but the product in the picture is not the same unit as they eliminated the foot pedal in the front to lift the ring so you cannot light it manually without opening the door grabbing the pigtail and lifting it while lighting the wick (see photo). Also the glow plug is a bit touchy. If you push the handle over to the end of the slot (to initiate the glow plug) the glow becomes weak and will not light the wick. You need to watch the glow plug as you push it's handle (switch) over and stop at the brightest point to light the wick. Very important - you have keep adjusting the wick down in the first couple of hours to maintain the 1/2 inch flame height or you will burn up you fuel in a hurry and burn the wick. See the instruction booklet (poorly written IMHO) Aside from those little quirks it does heat the garage very well. I would also recommend buying a blue 5 gallon fuel container and getting the kerosene from a oil/gas station in bulk as the single gallons at THD are pretty pricey. And bonus as of this writing the 5 gallon blue fuel containers are on close out right now for 10 bucks at THD.

DO NOT BUY BATTERIES for this thing because it devours them after a few uses. Buy barbecue lighers and use them to light the wick instead and save the batteries as a back up. Also, buy a few bottles of the kerosene wick conditioner to greatly extend the wick life and reduce the odor. Use an empty 1K bottle to store the siphon away from contaminants. Highly recommended for heat on a budget!

Advice: you have to soak the wick in kerosene for an hour on first use. The wick absorbs maybe 1/4-1/3 gallon of kerosene. This creates the illusion on first use that it uses more kerosene than it really does.

I live in the country and bought it to help lower my propane usage and it has helped especially with the ridiculous cold we’ve gotten here in Northern IL the last month. My only knock is the fill hole needs to be a bit bigger which isn’t the worst.
