No mess. Nothing to assemble. Just plug it in and play with the settings. I actually have a functioning fireplace, but it makes me nervous because it's at floor level. It's nice to have in case the power goes out in the winter, but mostly just use it to burn giant incense sticks. I set this log heater in the fireplace and it actually works pretty well. It doesn't really look like real logs, and it's a little small but it looks a little better than the ad pictures. I use a spark screen to enhance the illusion of fire. Of course no crackling sounds or wood smell, but when the room is dark it looks almost real. The heater and fan work well indoors. We've had a couple days of cold, damp weather this summer and this has helped to take off the chill. Can be used with just the lights and no heat. Mostly made out of plastic, very easy for 1 person to carry. 2 pronged plug. You're not suppose to use an extension cord with it. Most exterior parts remained cool while heater was running. Remote is quite small and takes 2 AAA batteries not included. There are controls on the heater as well.

Great for keeping your feet warm
Unlike most heaters, the heater on this 1460 BTU's electric fireplace heater is located at the bottom of the unit. This is perfect for my usually cold feet and ankles. The lighting on this, especially at night, is extremely relaxing and real-like.
It's 20 inch width makes it long enough for both of my small dogs to lay in front of it when returning from a chilly or rainy bathroom run. They love this heater as much as me.

The duraflame 20 inch log and ember set in simulated grate is perfect to place in existing fireplace openings to simulate a burning wood fire. The set comes complete with led lighting in bottom to simulate embers, lighting in the logs for burning effect and what sets this one a part from other products is that there is a rotating flames effects lighting which bounces off your fireplace walls. This great looking log set with realistic ember bed. Perfect for a functional fireplace or one that is no longer functional, or a faux fireplace. The insert operates manually by push-button controls and an adjustable thermostat on the right side of the insert, or via remote control. The remote control operates on 2-AAA batteries which are not included. The insert can be used with our without the heater fan. Heat pushed into the room by a whisper quiet fan at the bottom left side of the insert. The resin embers are solid and durable, while the plastic that makes up the bronze fireplace grate is flimsier, but the build quality overall is very good. The insert requires proximity to within 6-ft. of a 120V electrical outlet. The cord extending out of the fireplace is visible, but can be hidden behind logs or fireplace tools to give the insert a more realistic appearance. Can be used all year round.
