what's most cost effective propane or gasoline?

Asked by: engee
That depends on the cost of gas and propane in your area but in most cases gas is most cost effective. Do the math 4 gallon tank + gas cost ? x's 4 = A 20 pound tank of propane $25 - $30

I shopped for a Propane or Dual Fuel gen only as result of my past experience with both gasoline and lpg units. After several month shopping , including reading hundreds or reviews and questions I narrowed my choices to two the Duro and a Sportsman unit. Opted for the Duro based on significantly less weight plus the overall ratings and rep of Duro , gave up 1500 watts in concession. One problem encountered with the Duro 5500 was ONLY three reviews, but based on overall high rating of company I went with Duro. Received my unit 5/24 on schedule, in perfect condition. Unpacked by leaving unit upright and cutting off carton at bottom. Well packed and protected, wheels and handles etc in a separate carton. Went together effortlessly and quickly. Battery already installed , had to screw on ground wire only, Surprise funnel and clear hose included to make filling oil easy, No oil but I can understand mess of unit like this coming all way from Ca, with leaking bottle of oil. Filled oil today and started unit,by following directions exactly ( 2 or 3) squirts only Dimitri!, unit started in less than 3 seconds. Ran 1/2 hour no load then 1/2 hour varying load. When shutting down follow directions- remove load, shut OFF LPG at bottle then shut off key after lpg runs out and engine shuts down. 100 % satisfied so far, good looking , great performance, well built, quality shows

They sent me a replacement part but could not get cover off the motor to install it as the cover was too damaged to remove. Took it back to HD. Ordered another and received it with mis-aligned axles (which i bent back to square) and the air filter assembly is cracked/damaged and unusable. Called their customer service for replacement part and was told 4 months backorder on that part. This ones going back too. Their quality control is very poor and shipping packaging needs much improvement.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nice generator, a nice idea, but the one I received... Nice generator, a nice idea, but the one I received was full of defects. I tried calling customer service, which directed me to file a warranty claim by email. Several days later, I still have yet to hear from them. -My defects: when switching to 120/240, the regular 120 outlets don't work. -When switching to 120 only, only the regular outlets work, the twistlock does not work. When using the twistlock at 120, the circuit breaker trips at less than 2000 watts (yet the generator should put out 4500 running watts) making the generator have limited usefulness. -while in 120 only and using the regular outlets, after tripping the circuit breaker, there should be no power on any outlet, instead it puts out 200 volts on the regular outlets. (Luckily I didn't fry any equipment). Finally, the generator does not work for 20, 14 or 12 hours as advertised in the listing, the manual and on the box. I got about 10 hours at about a 1000 watts average per hour. There was also no direction how to break in the engine or when to replace the initial oil. Very frustrated so far. Can't return it to Home Depot as there as all generators are currently sold out.

None was present on mine. - The wheel kit instructions and accompanying pictures are extremely poor. My advice is to figure it out as best you can, and just initially finger tighten all parts. When everything looks correct, then do the final tightening. - The wheel kit instructions specify installing plastic washers on the handle bolts. None were supplied, but luckily I had some of the correct size. - One of the handle mounting brackets which are welded to the frame was pretty badly bent. I had to straighten that out carefully, using a hammer. - Of course, the assembly tools supplied are cheap, but I expected that and planned on using my own tools anyway. If you're planning on using them, be aware that 8/10/13/15 mm open end wrenches are supplied, but the axle bolts/nuts require 17/19 mm wrenches, which are not supplied. - Speaking of wrenches, the supplied spark plug wrench is impossible to get through the frame and onto the spark plug, and therefore totally useless. Again, I was planning on using my own anyway. - The unit requires a ground spike and wire, neither of which is supplied. - Also supplied is a cheap screwdriver for who knows what, since one is not required for assembly. On the bad side, you'll definitely want to check these items: - I initially started the generator using propane. It ran for about two minutes, then shut down. I found that the gas regulator output pipe had become completely detached, so it must have never been tightened at the factory. After I re-seated the pipe and tightened the retaining nut, the generator ran fine since it was then actually receiving fuel. - The muffler cover was missing one retaining bolt, and another was stripped. Again, luckily I had hardware on-hand to remedy that. On the good side: - Once I got it running, I tested every function and electrical output, and found everything working perfectly. I can't comment on how much load it will take before tripping its breaker, since I only tested it while simultaneously running a couple of 120v power tools. - Propane is a very nice fuel option since unlike gas, it remains fresh for years, making it a better fuel for emergency use. Attaching the propane hose is also a lot easier and safer than having to hassle with pouring gas into the tank. - An oil funnel and tube is supplied, but not mentioned in the manual. Good thing, because considering where the oil fill is located, I would have had to fabricate one myself otherwise. - The owner's manual includes instructions on how to replace the carbon brushes and AVR. This can be considered good or bad, as it looks like it was created by the same person who wrote the wheel kit assembly instructions. With the extended warranty I have, hopefully I won't need to worry about that stuff until far down the road. As I said, it seems to be a nice generator once you have it assembled and running. Even so, I have to deduct 2 stars for all of the hassle I went through with the things I've described above.

We bought this generator to use when our power goes out on our spring water pump in a remote location 1,000 feet from our house. Got it just in time for the electric company to condemn our meter and other equipment. They disconnected the service to the pump and we were out of power there for 6 days while waiting for the electrician to install the new equipment in some of the worst April weather we have seen in Western New York. No problem, though. this generator performed perfectly once he installed a cord and plug to the pump for the generator.. We love the extra features that our house generator doesn't have. We can use gas or propane, start the generator with a starter motor, charge a 12 volt battery, cut the main power with a flip of the switch and tell how many watts the generator is producing. We are very pleased with this unit!
