Q:My railing is all wrought iron so the top rail is skinny- do you have something that can hang from the rail top?

Answer This Question

A:  This item will not work for what your asking. You will need to purchase and basket that has hooks for your railings. This item is too wide to fit on a skinny railing. It's for 2 x 4 or wider railings.

A:  Hello. Unfortunately, we do not offer something small enough for a wrought iron top rail.

Q:How wide is the middle? Will it be too big to sit on a rp railing?

    Answer This Question

A:  We have almost 6 inch wide rail and they fit perfectly with the widest opening (they have 2 widths).

    by|Jul 22, 2021

A:  "How wide?" 3 7/8" and then it steps down to 5 7/8" So it will fit a 2x4 (actual 3 1/2") and it will fit a 2x6 (actual 5 1/2"z) Sorry, I have no idea what an rp railing is.

      by|May 17, 2021

A:  The top railing on my deck is 5 and a half inches wide. This thing has clearance on both sides, so I'd estimate that the bottom is at least 6 to 6 1/2 inches wide. Sorry....not sure what a rp railing is.

        by|Jun 24, 2021

A:  Mine fit perfect on the top rail. I fastened it to the rail so it would not fall off and I drilled holes so it would drain.

        by|May 31, 2020

          A:  Sits nicely on a 2x6.

A:  There are several small areas on the bottom that you can open to drain

            by|Aug 6, 2019

A:  You have to punch out the two thin round places at the bottom of the planter otherwise it does not drain.

              by|Apr 29, 2018

A:  You have to punch out the thin holes on the bottom of the planter to allow it to drain.

                by|Apr 29, 2018

A:  On the bottom of each side a small knockout hole is in the center bottom. Knock out the plastic in the hole and wallah, drainage happens. For good drainage knock out the hole on both sides and use some type of medium to prevent the holes from plugging up. A small piece of the weed fabric or anything similar would work. A:  To screw them on to the deck railing

                    by|Jun 5, 2016

A:  I drilled them at the lowest part of the planter, both sides.

A:  The pots that I bought already had a area that you can open a small hole to drain if your do not what I would do is put a screw driver at the ends of the pot off four sides and make a hole

A:  There are pre-made holes in the pot "legs" for draining. They are in different levels, but not the base (very bottom) of the pot. Using a pen or a nail you can pop the drainage out and water can escape. But the lowest part of the leg won't drain since the level of the drainage opening is higher.

A:  I found a small round indentation on both sides of the bottom that I punched out and the planter drained well.

Fits over 2x4 or 2x6 railing, I got about 17 of these things filled with plants and my railing now provides lots of square footage of garden space. I would give 5 stars but my one complaint is that they do not come with drain holes. I took a soldering iron and melted 4 holes on each side underneath (you could drill them). Also, the plastic could be a little thicker. Overall though I am really happy with them and would buy more if needed.

While made to fit on railing the gap is about a half inch to 3/4 of an inch wider than a 2X4 or 2X6 thus the tub is a bit wobbly on the rail and easily tipped by animals or strong wind gusts.

This planter is constructed to fit around deck rails. It can also be placed on a deck surface similar to other pot/planter styles. It fits nicely on my rails. Feels fairly steady. The drainage holes are located in the "legs" of the pot and on two levels of the legs, but none are in the lowest part of the pot. A side view would better explain my concern. Water will accumulate in the lower part of the planter until it reaches the level of the drain opening. I have a concern that water may rot roots in the lowest part of the pot. However, this could also be helpful as the plants can draw on this reserve of water during extremely hot days or if delayed in getting water. I purchased 4 of these planters, but returned 2. I want to see how the plants manage in the upcoming weeks.

Love these! They are so easy to slide around the deck, especially if I know a storm is coming. Holds lots of pretty flowers too! Don't need as much soil either, no waste. Had them for a couple of weeks now and am very pleased.
