Can these be used to mount a mirror to a hollow core 6-panel door?

Asked by DonMc November 23, 2020

Answer

Based on the product description you can use it in a hallow core door. You want to make sure that the mirror is anchored so that door movement won't cause the mirror to shift. I used it for a towel hook in a hallow core door over 6 months ago and it is still holding well.

Hi Mmemcm, this is Scott from the E-Z Ancor product team. The anchors are self-drilling and will self-tap into your hollow core door. If you would prefer to pre-drill, we recommend using a 1/4" bit.

I’m not sure this screw would offer enough support for a hinge. I’ve only used it for light weight racks.

Answer

Hi, I am Scott from ITW Brands – E-Z Ancor. The E-Z Ancor Stud Solvers are not designed for use in plaster walls. For your plaster wall application, you may want to consider pre-drilling through the plaster and using a toggle anchor.

Can you use finish screws other than the screws that come with it

Yes, but they will need to be #6 and you will have to be careful about the length. A shorter screw may not go into the anchor enough, a longer screw may bottom out in the anchor since the bottom of the anchor is solid.

Never again
I probably tried to use these on the wrong material... BUT: out of four attempts, three of them broke off almost instantly at the tip. One of them broke off at the top after one more turn of the screwdriver... Again, probably my fault. But. These feel like they're made out of tin? The ones that broke finally went in, after some determined screwing. Maybe they work in drywall or quarter inch lauan. Try before you commit.

Watched video on YouTube that showed this brand of anchors. It looked easy. I replaced a towel rack in the bathroom. So easy! A couple of weeks later, it still seems strong.

ALWAYS pre-drill door or drywall! They worked great for attaching wire racks to my new laundry room door. The racks will potentially carry a lot of weight as I find more stuff to hang on them. BUT, the anchors cause the drywall and wood door composite to deform when you screw them in. Without pre-drilling the deformation is worse. I used a utility knife to trim some of it away, but the result is unattractive. That's ok if you hang something over the anchor.

It's just an over all horrible product. It doesn't grab the material it trys to fasten into. It claimed it is able to bolt into shallow or hollow doors. It bites into the material about half way. And, it never bites in. I ended up doing the job the traditional way. Predrilling out all of the holes. And, then fastening the screws into place. It, ended up being a much better and cleaner job.

Description says it won't break when hitting a stud. That's completely false. Hit 3 different studs and broke 2 anchors on each stud. All broke the same way, the tip couldn't drill through the stud. So this is no difference from the plastic version.
